Hi, I just picked up the Asus Transformer T100TAF notebook pc, and want to image the current setup I just made before I get ready to install some rather large and complicated software on it. I also will be developing software on it too. I got it mainly for that so I can move around in my apt while developing software.

I just want to image and restore as easily and quickly as possible. I will be installing some software for certain situations, and I want to restore (back and forth) between these given configurations.

Can anyone recommend me a good Imager, that is small and easy to image/restore ?

I would prefer something that I would not have to elaborately install, especially since I have to factory reset the tablet and start fresh again in some cases. I would prefer to have an image of my development system and restore to that when needed. I've had to restore on my Android tablets a few times. And there's no imager for android, not to my knowledge. Anyway.

    Thank you.

    Code:

I use "SnapShot" in a bootable USB ThumbDrive running Win7pe with great success. It works fine on Win 8 and Win 8.1.

Alternatively you can use Clonezilla, but it's pretty much commandline all the way, but it is totally free and bullitproff.

  3. You can make bootable CD/DVD/USB recovery media from Acronis True Home. My back-up utility of choice for 6-7 years now.

  4. Racer isn't snapshot really called 'Drive Snapshot'? It seems to be a bit pricy.

I got in a BartPE image I downloaded many years ago. It's a small exe (circa 2006) that can run on any bootable USB / CD running windows. I currently run it in a "Windows 7 live" bootable USB. I've been using it for many years now with perfect success.

    * Correction, it is an HBCD bootable USB i'm using, not Windows 7 live. I added some custom utilities to it which includes snapshot.exe.

I also had excellent results with Clonezilla bootable USB / CD.

is anyone using Macrium ? I am using the free version. I was very impressed by the speed of the image creation. 9 minutes version 17 minutes for Acronis. I was satisfied with Macrium and uninstalled Acronis. Then, I went about my business and started to install a large programs on the 32GB (well, 11.2GB) internal hdd, when I had to cancel the install because it was not installing onto the D: drive and instead was installing on the C: drive, which I don't want. So I cancelled it and it went crazy and left about 3GB stranded and the uninstaller can not be found since it did not install. So, I headed over to my fresh image of the notebook and attempted to restore the image so that I could restart that installation process again. however, Macrium won't run the restore because it says that a file (in the C: drive) is in use and wants me to restart and load up and then start the process of restoring the image. However, it is not happening.

I must admit, I am not fluent in these things and just can't get all the steps right to get this going. In the old days, when I used Ghost 2003, it was the simplest to run in cases like these, but unfortunately, it doesn't run on win 7 and 8.1 OS's.

Acronis seems like it would do it but I un-installed it completely.

So, what can I do to get Macrium v5.3 to restore my image under win 8.1 ?

And when i select the [Run from Windows PE] button, I get this message.

So, I put my dvd+rw disk in the drive (the one that I created that PE rescue for) and restart, but it just boots back into the metro screen.

Enter the bios and disable the hd as a boot option ... then use your backup to restore ... once done re-enter bios and reset hd as boot option ... job done... some systems just jump past user actions and straight into windows.

It's main restriction is multiple partitions on single drives ... do them in order first to last with reboots in between.

Paragon are the next choice for freeware.

Miss the old drive image 5 ... best compressed images ever.

unsuccessful. once i get into the bios and change the boot manager option to "Disable" (its the only option in these tablet bios setups, then you have to save and exit and let it reboot into bios and then the option changes to show what is conncted to, in this case, my blu-ray / dvd writer. it displays the model number of the dvd writer. the next thing I do is let it reboot back into windows from the dvd writer (the dvd+rw with the macrium rescue media disc i created) and all it relentlessly keeps doing is booting back into the bios screen. i've been at this dead horse saga since 9:38am this morning and now its 2:14pm this afternoon. when will i learn and forget about this macrium software and move on already. sheesh. i guess not every system or laptop or notebook or (windows) tablet is compatible with macrium. been at their website and forums and search and search for solutions but no success.

i will stick to my last plan from last night and go to staples and just pick up a copy of ghost and do it through that.

Success at last, with Macrium and Restoring an image back over to the Asus T100 notebook. And it only took <6 minutes to restore the whole 32GB partitions.

I was able to figure out how to do a Restore of an image made from Macrium on the Asus T100 notebook. Apparently, there is an unknown setting (in BIOS) that you have to make in order for it to boot from the usb device. In my case, it is an LG Slim Portable Blu-Ray /DVD Writer, model # BP50NB40 (manuf date 2014/sept). I am using a 5pk of Memorex DVD+RW discs for the Macrium recovery media (the disc formated in UDF format), and it booted up into Macrium (a DOS version) successfully and restored the image from my D: drive usb2 1TB External HDD.

  13. I use the paid version of Macrium Reflect. With the paid version you can add Macrium Reflect to the boot menu. I also made a Macrium boot flashdrive and a boot cd Just to be sure I can restore my backup image. In Windows 8.1 if fast startup is on the computer doesn't shut all the way down. I leave it off because I dual boot.
