It there any software that renders .srt subtitles to video.
The result should be a transparent video with subtitles.

Don't know what you mean by render. If you want hard coded subtitles in an avi virtualdub will do it but you will need the Avery Lee filter and you will need to convert the srt to ssa. Subtitle workshop will do that. For soft subtitles use AVIAddXSub.
For mkvs use mkvmerge GUI from the mkvtoolnix for soft subtitles. For hard subtitles most of the programmes will do it - try handbrake. -
I just want to have a video with only subtitles and is transparent where there are no characters.
