  1. This is my first time attempting to burn one of my DVDs to CDRW. I am following the steps in the Newbie Conversion, yet when I get to using VFAPI Converter, it gives me an error message that makes no sense. I have downloaded the program twice and get the same result with both installations. I have successfully run the DVD2AVI software and have my D2V file. When I click on the Add button in VFAPI, I can select my file, though there is nothing in the box next to File of Type. When I click OK, the error I get is:
    ???? C:....\filename.d2v ??????.
My only option is to click OK which takes me back to the VFAPI program that hasn't changed. It is the same version as in the guide so I'm not sure what's going wrong.

  2. Just open your .d2v directly with TMPEG and open the audio separately also with TMPEG. That is, of course, if you are using TMPEG as encoder.

Make sure you have dvd2avi.exe and dvd2avi.vfp copied to the same directory. Also make sure you have installed the VFAPI codec.

  5. jem,

where are u feeding the d2v to ? Virtual Dub, NanDub, tmpgenc....
Are you frameserving with virtualdub at all?
U mentioned u downloaded the app twice or so,,,,so if its not the download that's corrupt, is the codec installed? Did Vfapi come with an *.inf file or with an install.bat ? Either way install the codec, (either right click on the .inf file and select Install,,,,or double click the install.bat or setup.bat file). Reboot if necessary and try the conversion again.

  6. If you want to open the pseudo .avi generated by VFAPIconv, and you have run ProxyOn from VirtualDub, you have to run ProxyOff in virtualDub.

If not, you'll get an error when trying to open the pseudo avi file.

  7. Thanks for all of the suggestions. First of all I was going to try to encode with the Panasonic MPEG1 encoder, but I can try the TMPGEnc software instead. Also, yes, I have installed the codec and get the same results. I don't know if I want to make a pseudo .avi file because I'm not sure what that is or what I'll need it for and I don't know what VirtualDub, or vdub, is so if that's later in the process, I haven't got that far yet. I can't open the .avi file generated by VFAPIconv because I can't get the d2v file into VFAPI to make an .avi file. So, I'll try the TMPGEnc software and see where it takes me. I'm sure I'll have more questions and I really appreciate your help.

  8. OK, here's my new one. Figured I could get by without using the Panasonic encoder and downloaded TMPGEnc. However, it says that my d2v file is unsupported when I try to load it. Did I miss a step without realizing it? According to the instructions on this site, the author has shown that he has loaded a d2v file, but mine won't. I did install the vfp file before running TMPGEnc, so I must have missed something. Any suggestions?

    Hi jem:

If you downloaded TMPGEnc 2.53, also download the VFAPI plug here:

  10. Total Noob Question...

What the heck does VFAPI stand for and why is it so important?

I would presume it is some form of system API that allows TMPGEnc to read the pseudo AVI file via the .d2v file generated by DVD2AVI. Some have said that VFAPI must be "...in the same directory...", this makes me wonder though... Are you saying that TMPGEnc, DVD2AVI, and VirtualDub should all be in the same system directory, along with the VFAPI plugin? Due to the fact that Windows is in general kind of dumb at times, I try to keep all software as separate as possible most of the time. Will this cause any problems? If not, can someone give an example, perhaps in CODE form here on the board, as to how they have their own directory structure set up? Thanks!

  11. people recomend putting dvd2avi & tmpgenc in the same folder because it eliminates potential problems registering the .vfp plugins. if you want, you can register the .vfp plugin locations manually by searching the registry & editing the appropriate entries. if you only run 1 version at a time & dont move anthing around you shouldn't have any problems
