    Hi all,

I just recently captured an AVI file with Virtualdub (480x480) frameserved to TMPG and encoded to SVCD using the SVCD-NTSC template. I then used TMPG to do a simple demux and BBMPEG to cut the movie into 750MB segments. I burned the first 750MB segment with Nero and it started out playing great and real smooth. Then at about the 25 minute mark or so the movie would start to blur and freeze for a second or so. Then it progessively got worse. Is there something I did wrong or didnt do. This is what I am working with:

    1) 500MHz; 100GB HD; 128MB RAM; Pentium 3 - System
    2) Live cable broadcast of classic black/white movie "All Quiet on the Western Front"
    3) Virtualdub with PICVideo MJPEG (quality 18) @ 480x480. Applied filters, identified as an interlaced. Frameserve to TMPGEnc.
    4) TMPGEnc - encode to SVCD using template (took an unbelievable 70 Hours). Then did a Simple Demux.
    5) BBMPEG - used the VCDHelp guide to cutting in 750MB segments.
    6) Burned with Nero SVCD template.

What gives? Why the stuttering? Could it be my system/hardware/software? Thanks in advance.

That should read PICVideo MJPEG (quality 18)

  3. What was the bitrate that you used in TMPEG to render the mpeg?

I believe you used the standard rate of 2520 Constant Bitrate. Try using 2300 with Automatic VBR.

BTW, I hardly see a difference beteen quality setting high and highest; it only takes much longer...

    Cheers

    Pat,

You are correct. I did use 2520 bitrate. Interesting thing is that the encoded MPEG2 file played great on my software DVd player (WinDVD). I will give your suggestion a try. Thanks.

If you don't get it to work after adjusting the bitrate, try encoding the audio and video separately in tmpgenc, then multiplex them together using bbmpeg. The audio in my SCVD's will studder if I encode video and audio in one shot using tmpgenc. If I do them separately, then join them using bbmpeg, everything plays flawlessly!

Your computer can play much higher bitrates than your DVD player. The chips in the DVD player are not as flexible as a PC.

Think about it, you can play several SVCD streams at the same time on a PC...

  7. Download the Bitrate viewer for free from here to check the rate used:
