Trouble with a one-cd VCD with DVD2SVCD and TMPGenc

I tried ripping a DVD using DVD2SVCD, altering the bitrate setings so that it would fit in just one CD (600 min, 2200 max, 813 avg, 2-pass VBR) just for testing porpouses. Since my standalone player doesn't read SVCD, I usually do something I read in this forum: use TMPGenc's single multiplex to change the header to MPEG-1 VCD so that the player can be fooled, or whatever it is (I'm new at this :wink: ). Usually, with 2-CD VCDs the output file is smaller, but in this case it's actually quite bigger (almost 100 MB), and doesn't fit the CD! Anyone of you Obi-Wans can help me? Thanks in advance!

dvd2svcd will usually look at and analyse the whole movie (unless you ripp only a few chapters), and will output x # of cd's. It'd be great if the next release incorporated a "Force 1 CD--80 mins", for certain times or flix that one would like on 1 cdr.
I'm still playing around the settings to try to make one cd, but you could try the following:
Uncheck Minimum Average (bitrate tab), and set Minimum Bitrate to 0.
Max bitrate will be whatever bitrate you want to try to fit on one cd, say a value from an svcd bitrate calculator. For one cd movies you could also try tmpgenc and or dvdX.

thing is, the mpg file outputted by DVD2SVCD IS small enough to fit an 80 min CD. Still, my standalone player can't play the file as it is, so I have to single-multiplex it in TMPGenc to MPEG-1 VCD. It's THIS file outputted by TMPG that's a lot bigger and doesn't fit, and it usually is smaller

what's the quality like on the mpg that dvd2svcd outputs?
Aha, so its tpmgenc again,,,,,there was something about multiplexing it as a non-standard vcd , non-compliant mpg1 (and burning it with nero as non-standard, if u use nero to burn) or something to dat effect,,,,that wouldnt alter the file size. Try doing a search of the forums.
Have you tried multiplexing it with bbmpg 1.8 and changing the headers to that of a VCD ? I think it will also add the scan offsets to the mpg, and it will let you specify the size, i.e. cut at 798mb, say if it did go over and created a second file of about 20mb or so,,,and if it was just credits,,,u could use only the first file.

well, it's not good, but it's not as terrible as I expected. I ripped "Unbreakable", and it's "watchable". It's a drama, though, full of "slow" scenes...

exactly. i managed to do it, finaly, multiplexing the mpg as a "mpg-1 vcd (non-compliant)". the output was indeed a smaller file (10 MB or something). (I burnt it with Nero, and it had some audio synch problems)
If I multiplex it as "mpg-1 vcd", it's 100 MB bigger!

Actually if you use CCE with DVD2SVCD the quality is excellant...and u will not beat it.

I force DVD rips to one 80min CDR all the time using the CCE encoder....all u do is in the bitrate tab make sure it says use 1 disk for all the program times...also make sure u uncheck the minimum average bit rate setting...

I can fit 90 minutes SVCD (16:9) PAL on one 80 min disk with only a few visible artifacts (fine for kids movies) however for features I will use 2 disks....and for 120 minute movie with 2 disks..the quality is exceptional...in fact I have challenged people to pick the differance between the original DVD and the back up...and they can't....even viewing via a LCD projector on a big screen (800*600 res)

Hi loumarx:

Rip your DVD with CladDVD or DVDDecrypter and run DVD2AVI to create your project .d2v file.

Then download the template in my signature below and apply it to TMPEG 2.53.
Most probably you'll be able to fit your whole movie on a single 80 minute CD-R.

The format is MPEG-1 VBR.

Download a sample, to test your DVD player, and check if it plays the format correctly.
