sound editing in video file

Hi, I need to cut out or mute the sound from portions of my video file. This is a one time job so I want to use a video editing freeware to do it. Windows movie maker doesn't seem to be able to do this easily. Are there any freeware out there that would enable muting the sound in certain portions of a video file?

Use the tool that fits the job. In particular, use the tool that also fits the format of the file. What is the format, you may ask? Good question: use MediaInfo to find out.
Then, look on VH's Tools page to see which editor supports that format. Note that you could always Demux the video's audio stream into its own standalone audio file, then edit the file (muting with an Audio editor, e.g. Audacity), re-save, re-encode (if necessary) and then re-mux along with the original video into a new video file. Lot less steps to do if you find a video editor that supports your original file, though.

Here's a thought...use a 30day trial of something like Sony Movie Studio. Even though the software isn't free, the 30day trial is. And it has a whole mess of features.

Old versions of WMM can do it. If you want to remove the audio track, you can do this with the XP and the Vista versions of Movie Maker. If you have Windows Live Movie Maker, you'll have to use another program to remove audio.

I use Scott's suggestion for removing audio from my video clips. (Sony Movie Studio)

Back in the day, when working with .mpg, I'd demux the audio with TMPGEnc Plus 2.5
then I'd edit the audio using GoldWave
and I'd remux the edited audio back into the mpg with TMPGEnc Plus 2.5.
