I donīt know what I did but all my files saved with Paint have the extension .PNG not hided. This is, when I work with Paint, at the header always appears not only FILE but FILE.PNG and when I rename the file, e.g., it doesnīt appear FILE A but FILE.PNG A.PNG . What must I do to eliminate the extension?

    Thanks for your help.

You might see if you've disabled the "Hide extensions for known file types" setting in Explorer.
(Tools > Folder Options > click "Folder and search options" > select the View tab. In the list, scroll down until you find "Hide extensions for known file types", and make sure there's a checkmark in the box next to it.)
Edit: Note that these are the directions for WinXP, as that's the OS listed in your Computer Details.

That said, of course, I'd much rather prefer to see the file extensions than hide them.

If you name your extension and MS has already named it, what you mention is the end result; file.png.png. Just the final extension is recognized.

(The 'Explorer' Ai Haibara mentions is Windows Explorer (Your desktop), not Internet Explorer, the MS browser.)

With W7: 'Control Panel>Category=Small Icons>Folder Options>View>Hide extensions for known filetypes' You can turn this off or on as desired. I always uncheck it so I can see what the extension really is. Otherwise you could have a file named, 'file.avi' when the true title would be 'file.avi.png and it would really be a .png file.

not sure it was already mentioned. but i know exactly the problem the OP is talking about.

when you have the "[x] Hide extensions for known file types" checked, then no file extensions show in explorer or any other form of folder view. so when you open a some applications, like paint, and you enter a filename, the whole filename string is treated as a filename and then it tacks on the extention, usually in caps. you're thinking by adding the .png (extension) yourself, the paint program will use that instead, but doesn't. thus, what you did was

paint.png and paint added .png, making it paint.png.PNG.

to get rid of this, you have to make the following change. this will globally affect all folder type views.

    1. open a folder
    2. menu\tools\folder options...
    3. select the View tab
    4. where it says [ ] Hide extensions for known file types, uncheck the checkbox
    5. select [OK] button to complete.

i prefer this method because sometimes certain utilites do not like mixture of lower/upper caps in filenames. for example, when you post a clip on this forum, it will reject it. or it used to, for me. other sites are similar. so, you are best left to do it manully, using the above steps.

edit: just read redwudz said it already.

The solution indicated by Redwudz solved my problem. Thanks Redwudz.

Also thank you, vhelp, for your explanations.

  8. The extension is the single most import part of any file name. It should never be hidden. The first thing I do with any new Windows install is disable the "hide extensions" option.
