Hi,
First time here..I hope I posted in the right place! I recently bought a digital video cam and a video caputre card and I am wondering what my recording options are once I have manipulated my video..I know I can burn to vcd but is there a way with firewire to transfer my piece back to the dv tape or into a vcr to record it? It would be easier to give to my friends and family in this format because most of them don't have dvd/vcd players and don't plan to purchase them in the future...I know I can export the video unedited back to the dv tape but once I do any editing the software I am using doesn't allow it...I am using videowave 3 which looks pretty basic..i heard adobe premiere has way more options..is this a software thing or is it just not possible....???

afternoon reu,
I've ben doing many DV caps to vcd/svcd (svcd being the better)
Since you didn't state what your DV cam model/make is, I can't
answer for sure, but for me, I have the Canon ZR-10 and it can
play it's output via the A/V (o) you see on the side, or
buttom or back of the DV cam. It's usually marked with a
Yellow (o) on it. This is the input AND output (pending
on your play/record settings. ie...,
* if you are RECORDing to tape, then the yellow (o) becomes
the input (A/V)
* if you are PLAYing the DV cam's miniDV tape, then you are
in (yello (o) ) OUTput mode. Just hook up your TV to this
guy using RCA plugs, or if your TV has s-video - same thing.
or, you can hook it up to your VCR (in your case) and just
press the record button.
As far as editing the DV tape and then exporting it back into
the DV miniDV tapes, you have to use the software that came
with your firewire card.
I'm still having lots of fun with my DV cam
* I cap from my satalete (directv) very clean signal and gives
me great quality vcd/svcd.
Good luck with your cam.

thx for your advice vhelp!!! I was able to figure out a way to record back to my dv tape...When I do record it back though, i get the video stuttering sometimes... it is totally the quality i want but sometimes it stutters...do you know what causes this...is it a hardware/thing? Or is it just part of transfering? And if it is either can I fix the problem? :)

afternoon reu,
I don't quite know what the studdering is all about on your end, but I
think that the best thing for you to do is make sure there is nothing
else running in the background. And, I mean everything, cept for the
"explorer" and "systray".
I know for me, that when I do firewire transfers, htough my system IS
up to it, I get dropouts or weird blocks and slowed down audio if I have
any other apps up and running. Sometimes, I can have internet up and
do firewire w/ NO problems what-so-ever, but uaually, I get the above
problems when I do have other apps up and running. Also, I noticed that
if I firewire to my hd once, and then need to do it again, I have to
shut this app down and then restart it up again. May be a bug, or else
something I dont know about, but if I dont do this either, at times, I
get the above problems again. This may just be related to my system,
but maybe its something similar to yours.
Also, I dont use those big resource hungry apps, like video studio or
mead-lead or whatever its called. Again, my system is very quirky/picky.
Most people have NORMAL system and can use those big apps for capping
via firewire. For me, I use this tiny app called "RSDVCAP.exe" And don't
ask for it. Cause I dont know where I got it, but I do remember I search
ed via the search engines "google" for one. If you know how to use these
search engines (as I do) you can/should be able to find this app)
But, again, I only use it cause I odn't like those big apps. I'm only
capping, not producing video/editing video ect, for ulead and whatnot.
And, I'm not saying that this "RSDVCAP" app is your answer in any way!
I'm sying that I use it cause of it's very small footprint on resources.
If you're willing to forgo the software (ulead, etc.) that came w/ your
firewire card setup, then give the app a try. I just don't know/remember
where I D/L'd it from - sorry!
But, first see if its because you have other apps open and running.
Like I said, even though (i) have a pretty fast system XP 1700+ it's stil
not acceptable for pefect firewire trasnfer. I have glitches. And, NO
pc tuneup is gonna fix it... i've seen a post here about "pc tuneup"
nonsense. ...foowy!
Other than that, my end resluts (encodes/svcds/vcs) are great looking.
Anyways, hope i've ben some help.
Good luck!
