I was wondering about this when I needed to pause a youtube video on my bluray player for awhile.

The bluray player is a lan unit but i have the netgear wireless adapter for it so I can stream with wifi n.

When a streaming video is paused on a unit not connected to a router by a cable and is only wireless is it still using any bandwidth?

In other words is it communicating at all to the video service?

Are there any bytes flowing back and forth between the router and the video player?

Or is it truly static and the buffer in the player knows where and when to pick up when you play?

    Just curious....

    Thanks.

  2. Depends on the player. I notice that Youtube vids on my computer using Firefox continue to download even after you hit pause. Just watch your router or DSL modem and you will see the lights flash if it is still downloading.

YouTube on my computer and phone buffers up to a certain point and then stops. Which is annoying because there are times I want to buffer a whole 30 min video on Wifi and leave the house.

Netflix buffers some minutes at 1080p before stopping, and longer and longer as you go down in resolution: it seems to base the buffer solely on megabytes.

You would probably be better off using a youtube downloader and copying it.

Good point. Though I've never paid attention to the router while using the bluray player. They are in separate rooms. But it should light up if it using the network.

    Thanks.
