I have recorded two video shots one with a Canon XA10 and the other with Canon HFR17. Both video quality and bitrates were identical (see attached photos).

I have inserted the two video files in a video editor and the output file is m2ts. If you look closely, the XA10 picture is much sharper than the HFR17 even both video shots have identical bitrates etc. I think the CMOS sensor of the XA10 is much superior. Even when I reduced the frame size of XA10 to 1220, the XA10 output is also sharper.

How can I make both camcorders have the same picture quality? \

    Thanks.

  2. There's a $1300 difference in price between those two cameras (and several years.) You shouldn't expect identical results. Better lenses, better sensor, better electronics.

Oh, for pete's sake, the XA10 has a vastly superior lens setup, as well as a much better imaging sensor. You cannot expect to EVER get the same picture quality from the HFR17. If you're trying to match footage, you'd have to degrade the image quality of the sharper footage down to a level that matches the inferior footage.

How can I degrade the picture? I tried frame width, bitrate, data rate but the XA10 picture stayed always sharper. Amazing....

Hahaha, you have to do it in post.

That XA10 is really a nice camera.
