    Hello, everyone.
Well, I always used Gordian Knot to make my Divx and Xvid movies from DVDs. It always worked fine (and still works).
After the Divx6 releasing, I wanted to make files based on this format, but I'm finding compatibility problems over GK.
Well, after reading the updated version of the classic tutorial teaching to use GK ( see in http://www.doom9.org/gknot-main3.htm ), I tried to make it and I found some problems.
First of all: I don't have Divx5 installed, only Divx6.
The problem is: after the job, when I'll watch the movie, the properties say the movie is Divx 5 in all softwares I play the file (including Divx Player itself) as showed on the image below:

I just don't know why it happens. As you can see in GK settings, the version I have installed (and configured) is the version 6. I don't even have Divx5 here...

Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong?
    Thank you all so much.
    Eduardo Macedo.

As far as I know the fourCC of DivX 6 is still DX50, same as DivX 5.x. Check the DivX userdata tag, it should say DivX6.

If you want to use the DivX6 format though then you must remux after encoding with GK to add subs, menu, etc.

Well, I don't know what fourCC is, but as I could understand, this means that Divx6 use the internal info of Divx5. Is it only an internal tag? But it's still Divx6. Am I right?
I don't plan making movies with internal subs and menus, I would only want to make movies with the new Divx6 format, 'cause it seems to be better than the older Divx and Xvid versions in image quality...
Does it all really make sense or you think there's no difference between Divx 5 and 6 in image quality?

Yes, it uses the same internal info. No point changing it since DivX 5.x is ASP MPEG-4 and DivX 6 is still ASP MPEG-4. Change the fourCC and you break compatibility for no reason. Decoders need to be updated to handle the new fourCC and that would include hardware based ones. Although who knows, maybe they already support DX60.

As I said, check the userdata tag (GSpot or MPEG4 Modifier) and it should tell you the exact version.

If you don't want subs, menu's, chapters, etc. then you don't want the new DivX format, just the codec.

I think that yes DivX 6 is capable of better image quality than DivX 5.x. XviD is still capable of even greater quality, although perhaps not at the bitrates you are aiming for? I don't have DivX 6 installed, therefor I haven't compared it with XviD.

Thank you so much for replying once again, celtic_druid.
I have just installed GSpot to check the real codec of the file and it confirmed the codec to be Divx5.
I just don't know what to do to create a Divx6 file using GK instead of the horrible software of DivxNetworks.
But I made an Xvid file and then I made another one using the same GK project with Divx in order to compare them both and the difference seemed to be huge between them. Xvid was (again) the champion.
I would only like to know if Divx6 is really that good DivxNetworks always says it is...
But I'll keep working with Xvid 'till I find a way of creating a Divx6 file. I actually don't really think the version 6 of that codec will be better than Xvid, but I'll keep in mind researching to find a way of creating a movie with it in order to be completely sure of that.
If you, or someone else, know why GK is not beeing able to handle this new codec, I would really love to be informed.
    Thanks.

How did you confirm that it was DivX 5? Just by the fourCC or the userdata tag also said so?

  7. The video and audio streams inside an AVI file include a "fourcc" code that tells a program what codec to use to decode the video or audio. For playback Divx 6 is backwards comaptible wit Divx 5 so it uses the same fourcc code, "DX50" -- that is, you can use Divx5 to decode Divx6 video. If you selected the Divx 6 codec when you compressed the video it was compressed with Divx 6.

I don't see a big difference between 5 and 6 in terms of video quality. There's also not much difference between Divx and recent builds of Xvid. If you're seeing major differences between them then the settings are different.

This thread has been posted a while ago but I am now running in the same problem. For test purpose I am also trying to encode a .AVI using divx6 as video codec but after completing the encoding all mediainfo and so on indicate the file to be divx5 e.g. DX50. I understand divx6 is making use of the same fourcc code but there should be a way to check if the video codec is Divx6, rigth? Also when looking at the hex information I cannot directly indicating the video codec to be used is divx6

What is the correct step to encode into the divx6 media format or to check the media info to be divx6? I hope somebody has information on this

    Thank you in advance,

Mediainfo should say something like this:

    Code:
    Writing library : DivX 6.8.5 (UTC 2009-08-20)
