Simply put, what is the best software for converting MKV video files (including a subtitle option) to MP4 for iPod on Mac OS X 10.5.8 or less?

  2. Handbrake. Doing it right now with MKV files.
Using it to match picture sizes between Superman the Movie Donner cut, deleted scenes, and Superman 2 Donner cut to create on Opus of a Superman movie, coming in at about 3:30, something Mario Puzo would have absolutely loved and after editing it all together reducing it to fit on an iPad.

MP4Tools does it for me. Free. If you want the ability to queue up multiple jobs, pay the shareware fee. Great app. I paid the fee and the results are perfect. While Handbrake -is- a great app for many things, I've found it less than stellar if the mkv is off-standard (like containing mp3 audio). YMMV, as they say.

Actually, as far as I've seen, all of the above-mentioned tools (Handbrake, MKVTools, MP4Tools) are Intel/Snow Leopard and above-only. The OP wants something that'll work on 10.5.8 or less.

The current versions are Intel, but (most of) these tools have been with us since the PPC days.

Yeah, but I wasn't sure the PPC versions of Handbrake, at least, could be easily found these days. (I didn't start using Handbrake myself until after I had an Intel Mac, despite how everyone kept recommending it. Well, that and my PPC Macs weren't all that suited for what I wanted to do with video )

I thought MKV/MP4Tools was more of a recent set of tools, though? Or, at least I didn't recall hearing about them until, say, the last 1-2 years or so.

To the OP: Sorry I missed the PPC/10.5.8 reference. Save your money up for an Intel Mac. PPC Macs are awful for getting any work done (and miserable for web-surfing). My first-gen Intel iMac was 40% faster than my G5 Power Mac tower.

If you'd like my old El Gato Turbo264 (not the HD version), PM me and I'll make you a deal.
