When I use Windows Media Player to open AVI/XviD the quality is terrible. The video is extremely blurred and without detail.

So, I wonder, does AVStoDVD use the same decoder as WMP when converting AVI/XviD to DVD or does it use some other decoder?

    Thanks

  2. Do the AVIs look better using another player or are they just crappy quality? Chances are it's nothing to do with the decoder. Depending on where they came from, "blurry and without detail" wouldn't be anything unusual. It's what can happen if video is encoded at a low resolution and/or a small file size.
Try MPC-HC. There's a portable version you can download and use without needing to actually install anything. I'd be surprised if they look any different (MPC-HC uses it's own internal decoders).

I'm pretty sure it's not the AVIs because ALL XviD AVIs look crappy in WMP. On the other hand, they look just fine in VLC.

You can find the codecs used by using Graph Studio within AVStoDVD. Import a video, then go to Codecs at the top of the main window of AVStoDVD, then Build DirectShow Filters Graph.

  5. WMP will use whatever DirectShow decoder you have installed. VLC uses it's own internal decoder (ffdshow). VLC also has a lot of post processing options. Different video renderers can also effect visual quality.
