Feral Effect E422/1 TBC, color corrector questions..

Just picked up a used Feral E422/1 TBC/video effect processor.. went thru manual and hooked up Feral with my JVC DVD recorder via S-Video.. but...

The TV screen is a split screen --top half shows source video (enabled to fit the half-screen); bottom half is just black--is it supposed to be like that?? I went thru the manual and can't find anything that addresses this.. (I'm guessing it's a 'bypass' feature or something so you can view source video vs. processed video??? If so, how do I enable bottom half from a black screen to view processed video for comparison (b/c there's nothing there to view)? If not, how can I remove the black screen? Or is this a defect?
