  1. Hi, everybody:

I am new here and please forgive me if my questions go repetitive.

I am not a native English speaker and my hobby is to translate English into my own language.

I used Subrip to extract the following DVD set's closed captions successfully. The process ran very smooth.
    http://www.amazon.com/Battleplan-Complete-Artist-Not-Provided/dp/B000WC38N2

But when I tried to extract the CC of the other DVD set below using the same way, the Subrip just cannot work on those VOB files.

Subrip can detect the existence of their CC, and it was reading those files, but not generating the .srt results.
By the way, I used 'DVD Decrypter' to transfer the VOB files from a DVD to my hard disk already.

This set gives the same situation too. http://store.discovery.com/detail.php?p=70339&ecid=PID-5580&pa=SEM-GPA&CAWELAID=806722...78&cagpspn=pla

The last 2 sets are both History Channel's products. Can it be because that company locks their products very tight?

I just have very limited knowledge about VOB files and things like that. Could someone please give me some hints? Thank you in advance.

You are talking about closed captions but using a subtitle ripper. They are NOT the same thing. So first we need to establish if you mean subtitles or closed captions. I think you mean subtitles, but you need to use the right term because you're not going to get the help you need if you don't.

DVD Decrypter could be part of the problem. It hasn't been updated in years and doesn't understand some newer anti-copy methods. I'm not familiar with any of the discs you mention so I don't know what kind of copy protection they use. You might install DVDFab and use it in free trial mode to rip one of your DVDs and see if you get better results than from DVD Decrypter. If so, then you'll need to buy DVDFab and use it from now on.

Your Walmart link is to a BluRay disc, but you are talking about DVDs in your post. We need to know which you are working with. Extracting subtitles from BluRay discs is completely different than doing it from DVDs.

Also, you may want to try using ccextractor instead of subrip to extract the closed captions directly from the vob files, as it works much better for this purpose. Keep in mind that just because the software says there are closed captions (CC's), doesn't mean that there actually are, and the software may legitimately generate an empty srt file. If this is the case, then you will have to rip the dvd subtitles instead ... I recommend vsrip ... and then OCR them ... popular consensus is that Subtitle Edit is very good for this.

Of course, as jman98 points out, these suggestions are only valid if you are, in fact, dealing with DVD's and not BluRays.
