i do a lot if table top instruction videos and the problem is i have to keep flipping the LCD screen on the camera from front facing the lens and back. Doing this in time breaks the fine connection to the LCD screen. I thought a way to solve this was to set up a remote 7 inch monitor on the table. Question is can i use one of the 7 inch monitors for a car backup camera or the monitors for the headrest used in cars? i can buy these for around $35.00 but i don't want to buy one and find out i can not plug my Sony handycam DCR SX40 into it or it will not work while making a video

The specs for that camera says that you can record to a DVD recorder here: ("The DCR-SX40 supports a direct connection to the VRD-P1 DVD burner (sold separately), which allows you to burn DVDs directly from your camcorder without the need for a PC. ") But I have no idea if it can send a signal to a monitor while recording. I would try to hook it up to your TV while recording or monitoring and see if that would work better. If that works then buy a cheap LCD TV screen and set it on your desk. I have no idea if the car tv monitors would work. They are too small.

I've got 4 Sony camcorders and run 2 of them with an external monitor connected to the composite output while recording so I suspect yours will do it too. As long as the monitor you use has composite input I don't see why it wont work. Before getting the monitor, you could try connecting to the composite input on a TV to check that it works.

At $35 each, you're not losing much if it doesn't work, compared to pro monitors that can cost upwards of $1000US. IJS
Since you're shooting in SD, even an old TV set with composite or S-Video inputs will work. The big question is do you still have the adapter cable? -
The camcorder has composite output. You can use that with any display that supports composite input.

thanks for the info i bought a sony DVD portable player and the specs did say AV output/input via a switch for the life of me i can not figure out how to switch from out to in
the DVD player has a cable with the res yellow white jacks at the end, the handycam also has a cable from the handy cam with the same jacks on the ends. I went to radio shack and got a switch box so i can plug both cables in the box. My issue now is how to switch the sony DVP FX750 to input player -
I second that.
Sony makes some oddball jacks and cables. If it doesn't just work, it may be a setting, or something as simple as closing the LCD panel to enable the composite output. Good luck!
EDIT: after closer examination, I haven't seen any portable DVD players (or laptops for that matter) that can be used as video monitors. It would be a nice feature, but it's just not there.Last edited by NTSC Refugee; 23rd Apr 2013 at 11:14. Reason: Add info.

I checked the manual and Sony's description for the DVP FX750 portable DVD player. You cannot use the A/V connections on your portable DVD player to accept input from a camera. The A/V ports can only provide output. They are provided to allow the DVP FX750 to be connected to a TV like a regular DVD player.
