Question on bluray players

This is my first time to buy a blu ray player and was wondering if all of them up convert standard DVDs . Is there any setting that needs to be done? The one I bought is a Sony bdp-bx59.

Most if not all of them upscale dvd video,just make sure you set your video output to 1080p or 720p in the sony video settings menu depending on your hdtv maximum resolution.

I went with the Sony S5100 for my first Blu-ray. It is 1080 and even with all the features no resolution probs.

Your HDTV will display the video it gets in the TV's native resolution, making all this fuss over upscaling a complete and utter waste of your time. If for some reason your BluRay player sent 480i/p video to the TV, the TV would upscale that to its native resolution. To be honest with you, cheap DVD/BD players rarely have very good upscaling anyway. Your TV might actually do a better job. But the truth is that most likely you won't notice any difference whatever you do, so geting all bent out of shape about "Does my BD player upscale DVDs or not?" accomplishes nothing. I've never heard of a BD player that didn't upscale DVDs if using HDMI outputs. All bets are off if you use any other output from the BD player to the TV. Again, even if your player did send 480i/p output to your TV, your TV would upscale that and you'd never notice the difference. Try testing if you wish and set the BD player to output 480p and compare it to the higher output (720p or 1080i/p depending on your TV's native resolution) and see if you really can tell a difference.
