I want to watch a movie on my plasma and the mkv does not play on it, how can i convert it to mp4 or just move the mpeg out of the container?

    What is better?

  2. Try mkvtomp4 - it will re-wrap into mp4 (no quality loss) if the streams are compatible (some types of audio are not compatible in mp4 container)

Note many TV players are incompatible with certain encoding settings used . If it still doesn't play, use mediainfo (view=>text) on the mkv, copy & paste back the info here

  5. Your manual says it supports mkv

So post the information from mediainfo as instructed above

You probably have to re-encode it (it's probably using incompatible settings or profile)

If it's just head stripping that's causing the problem then remuxing with mkvmerge will fix that.
    I think,therefore i am a hamster.

what did you mean by that?

  8. Open the mkv with mediainfo, use view=>text, copy and paste the information back here

It will provide information if there is header compression, or other encoding settings that might be incompatible

  10. mkvmerge v4.0 didn't have header stripping enabled, but sometimes 5 reference frames can cause problems with some players . You might have to encode it with 4 or less

Also, how do you have this connected ? Some usb connections and FAT32 limitations < 4GB , the filesize is over this

It might be because it has two audio files. It says it supports DTS so I would probably keep that. It doesn't say that it supports AC3 in MKV container (unless that's what it means by MPEG) which is weird and the AC3 audio is the first audio. You can use MKVmerge to remove the AC3 audio.

    Dolby Digital is AC3

@Yugos - Bottom line is TV players are crappy and incompatible with many things. YOu'd be better off getting a media player like WDTV, popcorn hour, asus oplay etc.... or HTPC.

It might be that nothing works. I know it's not that helpful, but you have to try a bunch of things, such as what Darrell suggested, try rewrapping to MP4 (but DTS isn't "officially" supported in MP4) , you might have to re-encode with 4 or less reference frames, or you might have to add borders back to 1280x720

  14. btw. to boost the mkv compatibility a bit reading/following:
    https://trac.bunkus.org/wiki/FAQ%3AImprovingPlaybackCompatibilityWithPlayers
    might help a bit.

If this is what it takes and everyone that encodes a movie uses different tech could i just buy a cable from my computer to my tv?

I have an integrated card so scart is the only option and the distance is about 10m..

Will there be much delay if hd is played or will the lag be too much with that much cable?
