Isnt USB 3.0 backwards compatible with 2.0 Ports?

For some reason, my Western Digital external hard drive (1TB) My Passport does not even read on a couple of ports on my Asus u47. Here are the specs.

I actually think it is 1x USB 3.0 and 2x USB 2.0
The ports are located 2 on the left side and 1 on the right side of the notebook.
The port located on tyhe right side reads my WD external hard drive but the two ports located on the left side do not.

I always thought these USB cords are backwards compatible.

Update any drivers using live update ?

All the windows updates are current. I'm trying to figure out what Asus program there is for live updates. Can't figure out what the current USB driver installed is.
