How do I get ASVtoDVD to use QuEnc?

I'd be grateful if someone could shed some light on problems I have to AVStoDVD (2.6.0).. In Windows XP, I don't recall that I ever had any problems, but in Win7 x64 the programme often runs as normal for some hours, then the frame indicator stops and there is no further activity. Task Manager doesn't show that the programme is 'not responding' but I can leave it running overnight and still there is no further progress. This has happened with many input files: mostly they are .avi. It seems to happen with HCenc but not, as far as I can tell, with QuEnc - though I can't easily test this, as I can't get QuEnc to run in AVStoDVD - it runs fine in FAVC BTW (see below).

If I input .mp4 files, the video is fine, but the sound always runs several times faster than it should, resulting in a mouse-like squeak for the first 20% or so of the video (VOB, of course) produced, then silence for the rest. This happens with FAVC too, so I guess it is not an AVStoDVD problem per se..

The other 'annoyance' is that I can't get AVStoASD to use the QuEnc instead of HCEnc. I go to Preferences/Video and choose QuEnc, but whether I then save this preference as a default or not, when I start the encoding, it is always HCEnc that starts up. I've tried dozens of times, with no success. I have used QuEnc with AVStoDVD on this machine in the past, but it seems to be a matter of luck - for the past week or so I haven't been able get QuEnc to come up at all. I have reinstalled AVStoDVD - still no luck. The QuEnc subfolder has 4 files in it, 3.38MBs, by the way..

Thanks for any help. (I should add that I am not at all an expert in this area, so excessively techy jargon may lose me!!).

Start AVStoDVD, then click on Tools at the top of the main window. You should see an option to run the Quick Startup Tutorial. Once it opens, you should see a section to select your Encoder Preferences. On the Select Video Encoder line, you should be able to specify QuEnc CBR 1-pass. Then click OK.

This should set QuEnc as the mpeg-2 encoder for the program.

To check this, import a file to convert. Once it is in the main window of AVStoDVD, click on the little gear icon under the green + sign on the right side. This should bring up the current configuration. Go to the Video tab and see which encoder has been chosen automatically. If it is not QuEnc, take the check mark out of the Auto Video setup box and change it to QuEnc. Then click ok.

when you load your file into AVS2DVD,
look at the two listed streams, if the audio and video streams are not the same length,
you will have a sync problem

example video 36:24 audio 42.41

also if your video is VFR you will run into sync problems

i sometimes have to use DVDstyler because of sync issues

although i think avstodvd has better quality video output

i too prefer qnec CBR over HENC vbr

to better understand how AVStoDVD chooses the video encoder profile, see Help/FAQ/Video/Q3.5. If you want to stick with QuEnc only, then follow Kerry56's suggestion.

For out-of-sync and freezing issues, I would suggest you to post here the AVStoDVD projects log files.

Great, didn't know about the tutorial setup.

I looked at the log files each time the programme froze up (I've deleted them all now), but it doesn't seem to produce any error message that I can see. Probably you would know better than I would however, so next time I get the same problemI will copy and paste the log text here.

Unfortunately, QuEnc also immediately hangs when I start encoding an mkv file - does AVStoDVD not work with the mkv format? It sees and loads the file up OK on the main interface... I have had to convert the file (to .mov using VLC, an all-night job as it is almost 4GBs), and then I was able to load it into AVStoDVD, add subtitles and get QuEnc to process it (working as I write - no end result as yet).

AVStoDVD does work on everything that your system can decode using a directshow approach. To properly use MKV, make sure to:

1. Have installed Haali Media Splitter
2. Have installed a good directwhow codecs suite (like ffdshow)
3. Have no codecs conflict

If you use the 'Codecs'/'Build Directshow Filters Graph' option on the MKV title, you can understand if your system is properly configured to decode MKV.

Please do not convert to mov: that intermediate step will result in quality loss.

Hi. First of all, thanks again for the help..

When ASVtoDVD had finished producing its VOB output, the entire movie was there and ran normally, apart from the important fact that the whole movie is a black screen. I am using SUPER encoder to try again, converting the mkv to an avi file and will see what ASVtoDVD makes of that. Of course, with large files it like this it takes for ever to find out - SUPER encoder has been running for 12 hours now and is probably far from finished. The PC I use is hardly a slow one either.. Well, I am in no rush, as long as I end up with a DVD I can watch on my TV.

I already have Haali Media Splitter and ffdshow installed (Ireinstalled them a couple of weeks ago, to be sure all OK).

I am attaching the log files for the mkv and mov conversions - mkv hangs, mov created the 'black' video: not sure if there are any clues as to what goes wrong??

MOV project: the log file is perfect. Have you tried to burn a DVD (better if RW) and play it with a standalone player?

MKV project: I guess there are some codecs/splitter issues. Please use the 'Codecs'/'Build Directshow Filters Graph' option on the MKV title, then take the screenshot of the GraphStudio output and post it here.

No, I didn't burn the folder to a DVD; I assumed with a black screen when I open all the ifo/vob files, I'd get the same result after burning. Will try it over the weekend (plus mkv advice) and post back.

The DVD burned with the vob files (from mov video) was also totally black.. odd if the log showed no problem.

I aborted the conversion of the mkv file to avi after 36 hours - less than half had been done by then, so that's not really a practical option: I will have to keep trying to get ASVtoDVD to work with mkv files (anyone else had any problems making DVDs from mkv format?). I haven't tried 'Build DirectShow ..' yet: will do this later on and post back with results,

OK, have set up the programme ready to process the mkv file, with subtitles and all and have taken a screenshot of the graph. Is that what you meant? This is the screenshot, anyway.

A bit ominous BTW that after running the menu wizard the preview it shows of the menu is just a blank, grey square, rather than an image from the video, as I usually get..

the AVC video stream is not processed by ffdshow, as the audio stream is. That's can lead to problems. You have Windows7 installed, don't you? Download Windows 7 Preferred Filters Tweaker and select ffdshow for video processing. More details in FAQ/General/Q1.5

Ok, I have downloaded and installed the Win7 Filters Tweaker and checked that I have the latest ffdshow installed (the downloaded setup file is ffdshow_rev4499_20130104_clsid .. I believe this is correct for my O/S, which is Windows 7 64-bit.

When I choose Preferred Decoders in the Tweaker, I get the screen as per my screenshot. It shows 32-bit and 64-bit decoders, but ffdshow doesn't appear on the 64-bit side. Is that correct? The ffdshow version I have is specified as 64-bit.. So do I now enable ffdshow for ALL appearances under 32-bit? Or is the reason I am not getting viewable DVDs down to the lack of ffdshow in 64-bit? Maybe I haven't set up ffdshow correctly? Not really sure if I need to set this up manually from the ffdshow programme - will have to Google it..

AVStoDVD is a 32bit application, therefore ffdshow 32 bit must be installed. If you want to install a 64bit version, you can, but it will not be used by AVStoDVD.

Select ffdshow for the 32bit side in Preferred Filters Tweaker, then try again the 2 projects with the MKV and MOV as source titles.

I went ahead anyway after my last post and selected ffdshow in all the 32-bit options. I haven't yet been able to try a .mov file, but files in .mkv format now work fine in AVStoDVD, so thanks for the help.

The only problem I seem to have is left is that, no matter how I adjust the parameters in ffdshow/subtitles, when I add subtitles to a movie, they all appear too far over to the right, but as this is a different topic, I will start a separate thread for it...
