  1. I've tried searching the forum but haven't found anything applicable: any links to other posts very welcome!

I have a .mov file, the video plays in Quicktime 7.7.3 (1680.64) but not the audio. Movie properties shows video as H.264, the sound track has a duration and a format 'AAC', but the 'data size' shows '-NA-'.

Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11.0 only imports the audio.

Windows Media Player plays both video and audio, so does VideoLAN / VLC Media Player (0.9.8a Grishenko), however, it does a really bad job of conversion: blocky video and no audio (this result rings a tiny bell somewhere, but I can't recall what it's about!).

I'd really like to be able to edit this file. Any suggestions?

I can create a small version to upload if anyone's interested.

First, see what an independent viewer says about this file: load it into MediaInfo and export the textmode (detailed!) output and post it here.

    BTW, nice avatar!

  3. + remuxing to mp4 might also help with compatibility

  4. Thanks for the responses! If you don't mind, I'll bear remuxing in mind for now: my previous chasing-my-own-tail muxing experiences had more in common with alchemy than anything practical.

    I downloaded MediaInfo - that's a handy gadget!

It came out with this for the file in q.:

  5. I've just tried exporting that file using quicktime, from mov to avi. PAL-DV produced good video (but silent audio track).

Imported that into Vegas MS, ungrouped the audio and deleted it.

Imported the .mov into Vegas: as before, it only showed the audio channel, but the sound is there.

So now I appear to have editable video with sound.

It's a bit of a chore though, and I'd still be interested to know why QT can't play (or export) the sound, etc. (and why WMP and VideoLan can play both video and audio).

I see a couple of strange things: video framerate=29.891? Should be 29.97. Duration vs. source duration are off by 21 msec. (prob because of the framerate being non-standard). My guess is that the audio, being VBR, is throwing QT for a loop (many programs don't like VBR audio). QT usually does well with AAC-LC (but not AAC-HE). Or maybe the 1channel is "too low" for the expected QT channel layout. Audio duration vs. Source duration don't match either, this time in the opposite direction!

I'd suggest operating on each of these separately (with tools that will work with them), and then recombining (remuxing) them later...

  7. Thanks for the detailed analysis there. The VBR observation sounds reasonable.

This is not high-quality video (but it is significant), and the method/cludge I mentioned in my previous posting seems adequate for the purpose.

    I appreciate the help here.
