It sounds like your system is too slow.
Be sure to use fast harddisks (ATA100-7200rpm is a minimum if you're using IDE for your storage).
Also be sure that you only capture to another disk, NEVER capture to the same disk as where your OS is located, even if it's in another partition.

When all this is okay, verify the AVI after capturing (best don't capture to MPEG directly, unless you're experenced with this). If the audio still seems to be okay in the AVI, then check that you use the correct settings in the correct MPEG-encoder (eg. use TMPGenc or bbMpeg).
Be sure you create a VCD compliant MPeG for MPG-1 or SVCD compliant for MPG-2.
Then again test the MPG-file. If still okay, now burn the thing. Be sure to use good authoring software, not those 'jerky' things like Nero .
If burning was successfull, and the (s)vcd looks okay at your PC, then check it with your (DVD)VCD player. Be sure the DVD/VCD player accepts CDR's (there must be a 2nd laserhead in standalong dvd-players to accept cdr's).

Need more information to try to figure out what your problem is. Please answer the following questions so we can figure out where your problem is.

    1. After you capture your video with the firewire card do you preview the video with windows media player? Does it play correctly?
    2. What burning software are you using(Nero,EasyCD, etc)?
    3. What O/S are you running (XP,2k,98,etc)?
    4. Did you check and make sure no other cards are using the same IRQ as the firewire card?
    5. What software are you using for the conversion to Mpeg-1?
    6. What are the settings you are using for capture and Mpeg-1 conversion?
    7. What is your system( CPU,m/b, memory,hds,etc)?

    8. If your writing software allows it do you preview the movie before you write it to CD?
