    hey guys,

i was hoping someone could either provide or point me in the direction of some really high quality footage, preferably very clear, clean, lots of bright colors, pristine, in 1080i, either mpeg-2 or avc. i'm running a bunch of test encodes testing various de-interlacing methods and various encoding parameters to see the effects on output quality of various settings and i'd like the best sources i can find, so if anyone can point me in the right direction i would greatly appreciate it.

  2. In lieu of a high quality source that matches your requirements you can fake one by stacking smaller clips, changing frame rates of lower speed videos and interlacing them, etc. It's not perfect but better than nothing.

This site has some videos, but not very colorful or high quality as I recall:

    http://media.xiph.org/ldv/pub/test_sequences/

You can open the .YUV files with AviSynth:

    RawSource("576i25_stockholm_ter.yuv", 720, 576, "I420")

You can figure it out from there...

I could capture some 1080i over the air ATSC but not sure if that has the required quality.
(I took a look at some samples, and it looks a little soft to me).

The Premiere Pro benchmark download from Adobe

    http://ppbm7.com/index.php/instructions

has six 1080i clips in it that may be of use to you. They are a mix of XDCAM MPEG HD422 - 50 Mbps, BDAV AVC - 24 max Mbps, MPEG-TS HDV - 33 max Mbps and XDCAM EX35 MPEG-4 - 36.5 Mbps. All are 25 fps and are about +/- 7 - 10 sec. long.

You could always DL the opensource & free movie "Sintel" (available via Blender.org). There is a 27GB package consisting of JP2k sequence at 4k resolution, along with LPCM BWF audio in a DCP disc image. That's about as good a reference source as you are going to get.

  7. One issue with Sintel is that it's computer generated. So it may not be representative of film sources or real world video.

  8. Is any of it interlaced?

Yeah, I agree, but not many pros are willing to give up final master footage to the masses for unrestricted use. Maybe you should look at cinematographer sites. Only one I frequent is DVInfo.net, or maybe Red's user forum. Users occasionally post "sample/test" footage when they're trying out new lenses, etc. But that's not quite the same.

DCP? That's like film - it's NEVER interlaced.

it's not interlaced but what i'm planning on doing is taking that master and creating an extremely high bitrate 1080i mpeg-2 and using that as a source for my various encoding tests.

jagabo does bring up a good point about it being cgi so if any of you run across anything in that quality range that's not cgi feel free to let me know.

  13. Search for Red One reel raw samples free download - seems that are available on various sites, perhaps vimeo - some of the video clips are available in original (upload) version to download.
