I am having a problem converting this file to DVD. I tried using notepad ++, didn't work. I've read in another thread of someone adjusting 4 different paths that seemed to work, but I don't have a clue of what it is being referred to.
Please help.

many thanks

2. The subs file is broken at line 41: there is a standalone "<", that is reserved char.

See Help/FAQ/Subtitles/Q5.1 how to debug a srt.

Thanks for the tip. I did find that char while waiting for your reply. I also converted other chapters without a problem which gave me the idea to check the characters. I will try to convert it now.
many thanks for your help.

Update: The fix worked perfectly. Originally, I used an older version of Subtitle Creator from outside of AVStoDVD and didn't pick up the error.

New problem: I decided to check all the subs for this project and came across one error:

"Error reading subtitle number 1.|(Input string was not in a correct format.)" I compared this to the format in the other subs and cannot find the error.

This is the text:
1
00:00:06,090 --> 00:00:07,290
Episode 27

How do I fix this?

thanks in advance

5. SubtitlesCreator accepts only SRT in ANSI format, not in UDF-8, as your file.

You can use Notepad to convert from UTF-8 to ANSI

Thanks for the reply. Many things that I have read on other threads are way over my head. So, are you saying that this error a direct result of UTF-8?
Did you mean Notepad++. That seems to be the only way that I can see the encoding selection.

I have converted 25 of these chapters with the same sub source UTF-8 and 2 gave me problems. I did convert to ANSI and the error disappears.

So I tried to convert this to DVD and encountered another problem.
It converts fine until the Sub stage. It stops with a message that it has encountered illegal characters. eg open ended lines. Click OK and continues to convert successfully. The problem is if I do this during the night, the process will stop until I get up in the morning and click ok. But the system will be on until the process is completed or aborted.
I've looked for the illegal characters and cannot find it. How do I go about correcting this?

Is there a way to avoid these errors? Is there one program that I can run an SRT or SUP to proof before converting.
I know I can check with Notepad++, subtitle creator, workshop.
But this last one, I don't know how to prevent it.

many thanks

7. There are so many potential errors in SRT files, they usually come from OCR routines. AVStoDVD includes a SRT fixing routine, but it cannot be 100% exhaustive. There is also Subtitle Edit that provides some fixing tools, again not 100% exhaustive.

It should be responsibility of the SRT publishers to make sure that they are error free.

Thanks for all the information and assistance.
For the subs attached earlier, I tried using Subtitle Edit and the conversion still stalls with this message:

Illegal characters encountered!
---------------------------
Subtitle contains illegal characters, e.g. non closing brackets <. Please fix before continuing!

After clicking OK, the conversion continues to it completion and seems to be okay.
The bad part, is that, as I use this program at night programmed to shutdown, but my computer will stay on til I click ok, usually the next morning, hours later.

I've opened the subs in all the mentioned programs, hoping that the right corrections are made. But, so far it is a hit or miss type deal.

1.Is there a way to fix this? It would be great if the program cn somehow highlight the error(s).
I looked thru the subs and have not found anything unusual that could be illegal characters or non closing brackets.
So, I still son't know what to look for.

again, many thanks
