  1. All I need to do is add music to the source video or a photo. Windows Live Movie Maker does not give good video quality results, and Windows Movie Maker can't save at higher bitrates, nor can I open mp4 YouTube videos on it, so I need something else. I need to save videos at 720 and 1080 resolutions.

On the other hand, is there a way to get Windows Movie Maker to open mp4 and various other type of video files and edit them?

You can use an encoder to do that, like virtualdub, open video or image, under audio->external source load your audio.

If you want more editing features like video and photo transitions you wont find much good free stuff.

  3. Is there a way to make virtualdub play more filetypes? I tried opening a YouTube mp4 file and mpeg-ts files, and it says those files are not supported.

Perhaps try the FFInput and/or the directshow input plugins.

Or frameserve the video into VirtualDub using AVISynth.
If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?
