Guys i'm fairly new to burning disk, generally i use convertx to dvd and everything runs smoothly. I now have a very large MKV i need to back up.
Its 4.22 Gb, 176 mins... and i can't get it to successfully back up on a standard 4.7gb 120mins disk. I've done smaller files successfully before but i'm at a loss now. Any advice would be much appreciated.
I'm reasonably good with computers and programmes but by no means am i an expert.

You are most likely using bad quality discs and that is at least part if not all of your problem. The ONLY consistently reliable makers of DVD media any more are Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden. Some Sony media may be OK, but I don't keep up with Sony and you have to roll the dice a bit with them as some is good and some is not. It's just easier to avoid it.
If using discs by other manufacturers then do your burns at lower speeds. Never burn faster than 4x on bad media. Burning at a lower speed may make your problems go away but the discs you burn will still be of poor quality, it's just that you may be able to use them. -
could just be bad discs. try to only use good quality verbatim or taiyo yuden.

would be suprised if it were the discs, i've burned countless avi, mkv, and mp4s on these and all have been fine. its just this one very large mkv that wont go successfully.. my thought was it needs compressing or something to make it smaller but my knowledge is limited.

Maybe try trimming off some of the video with MKVMergeGUI, and try making the disc again. I've had a few videos in the past that were encoded to fit on a DVD-R, but were slightly too big..
Or if you can't lose any of the video, try extracting the audio stream, and re-encoding it to a lesser bitrate so the file is slightly smaller. Mux it back with the video, then make the disc again.
