  1. Excuse me for my lack of knowledge with technical terms, but I'll try to explain: basically, I like to use TMPGEnc for taking screenshots of .avi files, because it allows for very good frame-by-frame viewing, making it easy to take pictures. But it won't work with .mp4 and .mkv files: is there a similar program that will work with them in a similar fashion? Thanks in advance.

Have you tried mpchc or vlc? Both do screenshots (well I know mpchc does for sure assuming vlc does also).

You can pause mpchc but I don't know if it has a frame advance feature. It has variable playback speed and may have frame by frame advance, I don't know as I've never looked.

One other option is to use virtualdub and export image sequences - I don't know if you can do a range or not - I believe you just get a screen dump of the whole video, might be thousands of stills, I'm not sure how it works though. But you can use directshowsource to open files that it doesn't natively read. (its in the drop down option in the file open window)

VLC does screen shots and it has frame advance although you can't go back that way so if you miss the spot you need to find it again and slowly step forward to it.

Also VLC will resize an image if it isn't 1:1 to begin with ... for instance a PAL DVD is 720x480 but if it is anamorphic then VLC takes a screen shot that is 1024x576 which is the proper 1:1 pixel ratio.

VirtualDub + the Matroska and QuickTime plugins

    Code:
"Copy source frame to clipboard (Ctrl + 1)"
