Which camcorders have Firewire outputs for direct viewing of a video recording? I have just been duped into buying a Sony which has no such outputs!

(once again after my post got lost... )
DV & HDV camcorders HAVE to have it, as that is the Primary & Determined way for those to get their type of data streams off of the camera and into a PC.
Other cams, which use DVD, HD or Flashdrive file-based formats, don't need this. They have an easier, quicker & higher quality way of doing it via block/file-based copying of data (usually through USB).

The whole "direct viewing" was a fortuitous by-product of the Firewire method, but I suspect that was your prime need for it (not so much the transfer-to-pc-for-editing method). As such, it should have been something you asked to your equipment salesman as a requirement for buying that particular model.
If you WERE told that you could do that WITHOUT Firewire (if you DID specifically ask about it), you were LIED to, and should be able to return it as it was "falsely advertised".

Thanks Scott - this is a great help. As you suspected, my prime reason for needing firewire output is related to an animal behaviour tracking software package. It's very difficult in our small video recorder market to find cameras that still have fire wire output!
