  1. hi,

this seems strange to me, but on a smaller than 4,500mb DVD movie, WHY is it not possible to just copy ALL the files onto hard disk THEN back onto a DVD-R ?

I tried this and the DVD player doesnt recognise the disc.

I would have though copying all the files would make the disc the same as the original ?

    err ?

    any ideas ?

    Buggs.

Well, BUG, let me take a crack at this.

First, I'm making this assumption: You didn't really COPY the files, but instead RIPPED them to your HD.

Okay, with that out of the way, there are some files that HAVE to be on a DVD (to be complient with the standard).

    1) There has to be TWO directories:
    AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS.

In the VIDEO_TS directory, these files HAVE to be there:

    VIDEO_TS.BUP
    VIDEO_TS.IFO
    VIDEO_TS.VOB
    VTS_01_0.BUP
    VTS_01_0.IFO
    VTS_01_0.VOB
    VTS_01_X.VOB <- contains the movie.
(I believe that this is complete, but I am doing this off the top of my head. To verify this, go to WWW.DOOM9.NET - they have excellent write-ups about what should be on a DVD and what the particular function of the file is.)

    2) Your directory and file names shouldn't be "JOLIET" extentions (ie, DO NOT LET LOWERCASE LETTERS BE USED). This is probably why some DVD players belch and others do not (among other reasons). Just to be safe, always use UC letters.

That being said, if you really DID just copy the files, you have just made a coaster... it is not possible to burn the CSS key in the correct place on a DVD of the recordable kind. Thus, it can't be read and can't be recognized.

  3. thanks, but -

YES - I did just copy them onto my hard disk.....

and yeah, they copied completely, same size etc etc and WITH ALL the
    VOB and IFO files etc...

just wondered WHY it doesnt work...

    any ideas ?

  4. He already told you. It is NOT the same. All you are seeing is a listing of files. The directory output is the same, NOT the disk.

It has to be a certain format.

JUST CUZ IT LOOKS THE SAME DOESN'T MEAN IT IS!!!!!

  5. errr...aren't we forgetting the CSS encryption?

the encryption needs to be removed...otherwise, copying the vobs straight from the DVD would result in unusable vobs (the encrypted segments of the vobs would be screwed up, unwatchable)
