I am trying to create a DVD from an AVI file (with subtitles in IDX and SUB) using AVStoDVD. Although two or three preliminary steps run successfully (taking about 70 minutes), consistently MuxMan aborts without doing anything. I get the same error message instructing me to examine the log files.

Several times now I have made minor changes to the configuration (such as changing Chapters Interval to 999 minutes) in accordance with the suggestions at this site only to run it again and find that MuxMan fails within a second or two. I cannot even see a way to test this specific problem without restarting the whole process, at a cost of some 70 minutes' delay.

Here are the log files. I would appreciate any assistance.

  2. The source file is quite interesting: MediaInfo reports 0 fps as video framerate. Where did you get that AVI?

I would suggest you to repack that AVI using VirtualDub or Avidemux, then come back to AVStoDVD for DVD conversion.

Thank you for the suggestion. I do not know why the frame rate is 0 fps; I obtained the file from someone else, and it works just fine when I display it with Preview Title Output (in AVStoDVD) or with the Windows Media Player.

By «repack», do you mean that I should open the file and save it again? VirtualDub was going to turn this 0,8 GB file into one of some 160 GB, so I gave up on VirtualDub and tried Avidemux instead. Avidemux said to use Tool→Rebuild Frame; then it wrote a file of roughly the same size. That file works correctly in the Windows Media Player, but there is no sound in Preview Title Output.

Also, the file still says «0 fps» in AVStoDVD.

I used Avidemux to convert the file to MP4. This time both the audio and the video worked in Preview Title Output, and AVStoDVD reported that it had successfully built the project (although there was a message at the end about skipping the conversion of the audio).

I didn't know that it was necessary to specify «Burn DVD» from one of the menus. Just now I specified that, and the whole process (more than an hour and a half) started over again. I hope that it will work this time.

  6. By re-pack I meant to direct stream copy both video and audio in a new AVI (or MP4 or MKV). BTW, if Avidemux has suggested to rebuild frame, the original AVI was somehow broken.

You could burn DVD folder by yourself (i.e. with ImgBurn) without running again the project.

I was able to burn a DVD. Unfortunately, the sound and the subtitles are decidedly out of synch with the video: they start about thirty seconds too late. The MP4 file that I created with Avidemux is correct.

I just compared the DVD (the files used to produce it seem to have disappeared) with the MP4 file. Apparently the video on the DVD starts about 27 seconds too early: a scene that appears at 2:00 in the MP4 file appears at 1:37 on the DVD, although the audio in both versions starts (correctly) at 2:00.

Thanks. I'll find a way to upload the file.

I have used Avidemux to generate both MP4 and MKV. Both files work correctly in the Windows Media Player but exhibit the same defect (audio and video approximately 25 seconds out of synch) in AVStoDVD (Preview Title Output). So I am inclined to think that the problem lies in my installation of AVStoDVD—either in the software itself or in my configuration or use thereof.

I wouldn't be so sure myself ... I found the one thing avstodvd really had over other dvd encoder/authors was the ability to work with files that had weird non standard codecs that the original ripper/encoder had on their machine.

It would help to clear things up if you used mediainfo on the file and posted the results. Every computer media user should have that program.

I've used avidemux as suggested above on problem videos. It almost always worked ... avidemux uses very, very good internal libraries and will read almost anything that isn't broken.

    Note I said almost anything.

In addition to potential codec problems, there are a lot of video files floating around out there that are simply encoded wrong. Either the ripping/encoding software was junk without proper settings, or the software was good but they didn't have a clue how to use it. The latter issue is very common. Video encoding standards are complicated and designed for pros.

Those types of bad video may play in smplayer or vlc but they won't work all that well, and they won't encode to dvd compatible format very well at all.

The file itself may well be incorrectly encoded. I do not know its provenance (probably some Web site) and could not attest to its quality. Someone gave me the file and asked me to put it onto DVD.

But something must be wrong when the file plays correctly in the Windows Media Player but not in AVStoDVD (Preview Title Output).

In any event, here are the reports from Mediainfo, for both the original AVI and the MP4 that I generated with Avidemux. Note that the frame rate, which consistently appears as 0 fps in AVStoDVD, is shown here as 23,976 fps.

  13. I'm just downloading the AVI right now.

In the meanwhile, could you make this attempt:

    1. Load the original AVI into AVStoDVD
    2. Go to 'Edit Title'/'Edit Source Title Info'/'Video Framerate'
    3. Insert 23.976 (be careful to use . and not , as decimal separator)
    4. Run the project

Thank you for examining the file.

Just now I set the video frame rate as you indicated; however, I got a warning stating that the value was invalid. Now the sound starts a good 15 or 20 seconds before the video, whereas previously it started after the video.

Actually, it seems to be working now, at least in Preview Title Output. I selected XviD under Source Titles and then entered the frame rate as you suggested, and now it works. Then again, it also previously worked in Preview Title Output, although the project wouldn't build.

I'll try to run the project now.

Could you post the log file?

Meanwhile I have tried to convert the AVI you sent me. Just trimmed few frames (3000) to speed up the test. No issues. See log file.

Some other trials, one by one:

    - Give a try to latest AVStoDVD 2.5.0 alpha release
    - Change the system decimal separator from "," to "." in Windows International Settings
    - Uninstall and reinstall AviSynth

    Let me know
