  1. What is the diff between the I5 xxxx and the E3 1220 (this one is without HD 2000 graphics). E3 1225 has Hd2000 gfx) Both are Intel chips BTW.
Both are 4core/4thread cpu's running at approx same speed 3.1 ghz .. obviously one is a server chip and the other is a desktop chip, so why wouldnt I buy the server version If I can get it cheaper than the I5?
Is there any diff besides Intels segmentation, I would be coming from a E6750 D/C so I would expect to see a great improvement.
A semi technical answer would be good.

The package is HP's server g7 with £150 cash back(UK only, up yours yankee doodle) making a nice small "microserver for about 250, all in. The only problem I can see is that AFAIK, the mobo (C202??) has four pcie sockets, two of which are x4 open ended, thus allowing me to install a normal Gfx card, I think. Or am I barking up the wrong tree.

  4. The E3 1220 has 8 MB L3 cache vs 6 MB on the i5 2400. Since it lacks the GPU its thermal design power is lower, 80W vs 95W. It doesn't come with a cooler; the boxed i5 2400 does. And it costs more than the i5 2400 at NewEgg, $210 vs $190.

  5. I'm really wondering if the internals are any different .. I can certainly see intel fusing off the GPU and thus lowering the TDP. Is this really just a defective I5 (ie GPU not up to spec) or are there internal differences.
I would like to see these pitched against each in gaming and encoding, specifically handbrake, at HD res.

  6. It's probably the same die with the GPU disabled and 2 MB more of the L3 cache enabled.

  7. Could be a good deal .. but for the £250 that the HP server deal works out at, I think I could match or exceed the spec AND get to choose my own parts. (not sure I'd be able to fit an I5 into that budget tho)
Re those HP deals, the HP microserver n40L is a good deal at £130'ish but the processor is too feeble and the mobo too small
The G7 is powerful enough (e3 1220) but an unknown quantity in terms of mobo facilitys. (I think they use an Intel C20x )
