Hello! I am a newbie to this forum and hope that someone will be able to shed some light on a preplexing problem I seem to be having with the CIS that I installed on my Epson R300!

I own an Epson R300 and CIS that I purchased from "wholesale.ink" I followed the installation instructions and it worked perfectly. Just two days ago, however, the "red" flashing button on the console and the display gave me an error message, "Ink Cartridge(s) Cannot be Recognized: Magenta: T0483 For best results, use genuine EPSON Inks"

After reading literally hundreds of postings on this Forum, I downloaded the SSC Service Utility, which, when I ran it, told me that my Magenta Ink Cartridge was showing "Empty" at 0%. When I tried to reset the levels on that, and all other cartridges, I was not able to get the Magenta cartridge to be recognized. The printer did not work, nor has it worked since then!

From yet another posting, I learned that I could carefully remove the CIS Cartridges and re-install them, and that when the printer was turned on again, the "smart" "auto" chips in all of the cartridges would reset themselves to show between 90% and 100% full. This did not happen, and the "red" flashing light continued to taunt and challenge me!

I tried numerous other "fixes" from other postings in this Forum, to no avail.

Then I sent an email to "wholesale_ink" at supebuy@optonline.net reporting what seemed to me to be a malfunction in the reset chip for the CIS Magenta Cartridge.

So: to my questions to this forum:

    1. Am I doing something wrong when using the SSC Service Utility to prevents the Magenta Cartridge from registering "full," and if so, could someone post a procedure (step by step please) to help me make the utility work with my Epson R300?

    2. If the chip on the Magenta Cartridge is, indeed, not working - although at this point all I can say for certain is that the printer does not recognize the chip and it is registering as "0%" full according the the SSC Service Utility - will using a "chip resetter" - external model, supposedly available at Staples for around US$10.00, be able to reset this chip and get me up and running again?

    (a) If the chip resetter works, will the reset chip now behave like the other chips; doing its "reset" along with all the other auto reset chips, or will I have to continue to "reset" that particular chip with the chip resetter, again and again?

    3. I gather, from yet other postings, that is is possible to swap out the chip on the one defective cartridge if I can get one from the people who sold me the CIS originally. Is it difficult to accomplish this chip swap, and must all the chips (the old ones and the new one) be the same, or will any resettable chip work in conjunction with the ones that are functioning at present?

I hope that someone on this forum will have some answers for me!

Oh, and BTW, does anyone, perchance have a good phone number for wholesale_ink? I should like to call them, but can't seem to find a listing anywhere.

    Best,

    Robert B. Yoshioka

I just buy carts myself, but here is link you might want to try:

    http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml

It's software that allows you to reset chip while still installed among other things. I'm always interested in printing costs and what others are doing.

Also, you can get a good chip reset tool at http://www.atlanticinkjet.com for $10. They also have needles, blank carts, ink, etc.

    Dear Videobread:

Thanks for your reply. Already have the utility you pointed to...it told me that my Magenta cartridge is not working...but is not able to help me reset the chip associated with the Magenta cartridge.

Have you checked out www.printonadime.com/ ?

They seem to have chips, as well as chip resetters for less than the $10.00 you noted.

Wrote to them and await their answer...will let you know if anything comes of this quest!

    Best,

    RBY

I just experienced the same problem, searched the web everywhere, and couldn't fix it...

Then I tried something and IT WORKED!!!!!!!

    1. Take ALL cartridges out of the Epson Printer
    2. Close the lid and press the button as if you just finished [still, with no ink cartridges inside.
The Epson Utility will say CARTRIDGE NOT RECOGNIZED for all 4.
    3. Put it into cartridge replacement mode, and put ONE of the cartridges back in and press the button.
The Epson Utility will say CARTRIDGE NOT RECOGNIZED for all but the one you inserted.
    4. Repeat step 3 for the rest of the cartridges and all of a sudden you can print again!

    YAY!

What I did to get mine WORKING...!
Had a problem with my Epson D92 printer with a CIS kit (ARC 3.1 711R's) which had been going fine for years.
Red light was on whatever I did. Black ink not recognised.
After hours of reinserting, cleaning the contacts, scrubbing the surface of the contacts so the metal was fresher it made no difference at all.
I also did the above trick, taking all the carts out and reinserting them and it made no difference. Thats why I read the thread...
I had prevoiusly inserted the epson orginal carts and the printer worked, so I knew it was a problem with the CIS chip (voltages?).

I replaced the black CIS cart with the Cyan one, and everything reset back and was all working (apart from the fact black was now cyan and vica versa)!!!

I then swapped them back. Still working fine. Must have reset some counter in the printer! Absolutely crazy 10 hours spent getting covered in ink. Hopefully this will save somebody some time.

If you have a problem SWAP the carts!!

  6. Have not used a CIS kit but I have replaced a chip that detached from a cartridge, quite simple with a small amount of Superglue. Don't see why you could not replace existing chips with original factory chips and use a resetter. Have never read of anyone using the resetter on non-factory chips.

For $10.00 have reset aproximately 70 or so cartridges and no problems yet. I just refill the existing cartridges, did not want to risk a significant amount of cash with so many problem reports I have read on the CIS kits.

The CIS kit is less hassle than the original cartridges (when it works).
After again getting problems with the CIS kit I have now a fault where black does not register again, but swapping doesnt seem to make any difference.

I thought it was the printers black ink cartridge at first, but when fitting the all the epson original carts it registers.
After reading around the ARC chip on the black cart is a master chip, while all the other colours are slaves. I assume there is a more seroius problem with the black cart chip as its got worse and I cannot get the system working again.

Well, I managed to fool the thing by loading it with a 'inkrite' cartridge in place of the black cart again. When it works, and the red light goes off, swap it with the black ink again without turning it off, (push the printerhead to the left to do this even if its locked). Then take the air from the cartridge with a syringe.
    Then never turn it off!
The printer's black cartridge slot works, but the master ARC chip on the black cart is clearly faulty. I will have to get a new set of ARC chips.

RBYoshioka hasn't logged in since Feb. 2007. Although I have to admit that this is one of the very very rare threads in which posts added years after the final original posts actually have some value and are relevant, this is why as a general rule we discourage digging up old threads and posting to them. Your link may help somebody else but RBYoshioka is long gone from here.
