  1. I know that only a minority of DVD players in the U.S. will play PAL DVDs, and if you are going to be buying PAL formatted DVDs, you need to to check the specs on your player to make sure that they will play. But if you have a DVD player that does not support PAL, but it does play Xvids, will Xvids encoded from PAL sources play without changing the frame rate or doing some other conversion?

  2. Players that support Divx/Xvid AVI usually support a wide range of frame rates. 25 fps isn't a problem.

You can't rely on the manufacturer to tell you if PAL video is supported. Sometimes they don't mention it because they can only officially support it if it's region free or if a region free hack code exists for your player (they cannot admit to the latter). North American consumers are pretty dumb about this stuff and it's just easier to keep problems to a minimum by not talking about it. The people who understand this stuff can figure out on their own if the player supports it or not.

jagabo is quite right that if you have a player that supports Divx/Xvid then it should be OK with 25 fps Divx/Xvid.

  4. Thanks for the prompt replies. I really appreciate the information that the experts on this forum provide.

I would never have thought of it myself, but it makes sense that manufacturers might not advertise the fact that they support PAL, when officially they are not region-free.
