I can't begin to count the number of flat tires I have changed; what did this guy do? Was the tire truly inflated, or did this only reposition it back on the wheel???

    They did this on mythbusters.

It does pop it on the tire but I forgot exactly what the story was behind it.

It was the second topic on a show - the portion done by Tory, Grant and Kari. If I can dig up the show title I'll post it. Like I said I forgot what their conclusion was. I think its not permanent.

Here it is. Its about 5 minutes or so on this particular clip. I haven't rewatched it yet but they should give an explanation for you.

Yeah, Ok, I see now. This is a way to reseat the tire bead on the rim if it separates. An air hose must be there to fill it with air or it will deflate. Still, it's a pretty neat trick. I'll bet OSHA would throw a fit if someone tried it on a jobsite.

  4. This trick only reseats the tire on the rim so it can be inflated. It can be dangerous so I wouldn't recommend trying it.

A safer way is to tie a rope loop or belt around the diameter of the tire and tighten it like a tourniquet.
