MediaInfo, open mkv. Compare the ones that doesn't work with the ones that work.

And it could just be compressed mkv headers, see https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/341226-Header-stripping

You need to look in the TV's owners manual for the list of supported containers and audio-video formats. The LG TV may have come with a CD containing a PDF version of the manual in addition to the printed copy. PDF manuals are easier to search. The list of formats will give you an idea of what is supported. There may or may not also be additional information about specific options within various formats that the TV does not support.

Baldrick - Maybe that article needs to be made a sticky. It's coming up a lot.

  6. That's a funky file, really funky. In every way possible: frame rate, audio frequency, audio sampling rate, AVC level 1.3, etc. Dunno who made it, and maybe it plays on his computer, but I wouldn't expect it to play on *any* TV. But maybe someone with a deeper knowledge of those parameters will comment.

OTOH, I have a new LG 65LW6500 3D HDTV, and can confirm it will play properly encoded MKVs (i.e. made by myself) and transport streams containing AVC (H.264) video with AC3. From NTFS formatted USB thumb drives and external hard drives, no problem. But seeing as how you haven't told us the model number of your TV (is it a secret?), I'm just guessing the problem is the file.

actually i was wrong the error "unsupported vidoe codec" is from my surround sound player when i hook up the usb drive to it to play that file . If i hook it up to my tv direct i get video but no sound. I used mkv merge and mk2vob to try to see if they work but still no sound only video. i then used divex and converted the video there and get sound but its choppy and in and out.

You can easily use something like GOTsent to convert these to MP4. The video probably doesn't need to be converted, so you could use the option to just do a stream copy there. It will save time and not degrade your video. MKV is just not as supported as MP4 and there is little advantage to using the MKV container.
