  1. is this possible?

i want to capture a video signal into different formats at the same time. someone recommended i check out ffmpeg. i'd like to control multiple capture windows with one set of controls.

is h264 software encoding in real time even possible? how about avid dnx36?

is ffmpeg the tool to do this? it seems to be able to convert files, but can it capture a video signal?

SDI video is fully decompressed (either 8bit or 10bit and usually 4:2:2).

Are your h.264 goals high quality or streaming? What resolution and bit rates?

  4. my h264 goals are merely reducing the file size for proxy reviewing and speed of transfer to multiple devices. doesn't have to be small enough to stream on the internet though.

is there any capturing software that will let you select an HD video feed (sdi or hdmi) and capture while encoding in real time?

quicktime will do this but it does not let you select the codec to be used.
