  1. Hi ,

I have some DV tapes recorded in 4:3 format. I want to watch them on my 16:9 tv. I need advice for making and converting them to 16:9.

I use Virtualdub for years so this is my best video tool. I can use internal cropping plugin feature for cutting top and down part on video. If you advice other pluging or better way please write.

I can also convert the DV.avi to Xvid or .H264 VFW codec by Virtualdub. Do you advice me to use x264 Encoder r21xx ? I also need help for expert settings. I have tried 2 pass Xvid before many times for other videos . I also need better advice for codec and advanced settings. File size is not a problem , so i want to convert with very high quality.

    Thanks

  2. Converting 4:3 to 16:9 is ill adviced. But....

For NTSC: crop a total of 120 lines off the top and bottom of the frame (eg, 60 off the top, 60 off the bottom). For PAL copy a total of 144 lines off the top and bottom. You now have a 16:9 DAR video. What you do from there depends on what you are going to use to watch the video. Standard DVD player? Divx/DVD player? Standalone media player? Computer?

  3. Thanks for the answer.

I will watch the converted video from tv's own usb. It can handle divx/xvid , mp4 (h264) almost all kind of video formats. I can also use FFMpeg based encoders ( i am familiar with gui based like Winff).

I will also watch on computer but it is not a problem because my pc and graphic card is good enough for playing any kind of videos even high profile and bitrate torture videos such as 40 mb/s birds.mkv, ocean life demo.

So as a summary , i want to achive the maximum quality from the compressed video. It can be 100-200 mb large in size for the cost of quality which is not a deal.
