Recently I have been having problems playing VC-1 re-muxed MKVs on my Seagate player. After going thru a number of steps including re-installing older versions of ToolNix to no avail, I finally traced the problem to the de-muxing process. Now, using MKVCleaver or MKVExtractGUI2 the video is listed as avi instead of VC1. Manually changing the suffix to vc1 doesn't help.

When inserted into MMG, MMG indicates it is "Using the demultiplexer for the format 'AVI'".

However, If I use TSmuxer on the original MKV, it outputs the video as vc1 and MMG now indicates "Using the demultiplexer for the format 'VC1'."

Now the file plays just fine. I assume this has something to do with how DVDFabPassKey is now working. It's the only thing thats changed recently.

So, I was wondering if there was a way to force MMG to use the demultiplexer for VC1.

Why use earlier versions of mkvtoolnix over newer versions? Just curious. If it's the header compression issue, that can be disabled.

Does MediaInfo correctly identify the video stream in the MKVs?

Since I already had the earlier versions of toolNix on my computer as zips I thought I would give them a try as I had never experienced this problem previously.

Media Info always identifies the video correctly as VC1. The only difference that I can find now is that TSMuxer produces a video listed as VC1 and MKVExtractGUI lists the video as AVI.

So, when MMG remuxes that file it uses the AVI demultiplexer for the format 'AVI and the TSMuxer video uses the 'demultiplexer for the format 'VC1'.

One works.... the other doesn't... and I don't know why after years of working correctly it changed.

Does it happen if you use DVDFab itself, rather than Passkey?

It could be Passkey, but first, test it with the latest versions of mkvtoolnix and MKVExtractGUI-2, just to be sure.

I've used 5.0 and now 5.1 toolNix and also went back as far as 4.3. All the same.

I don't have a paid version of Fab only Passkey.

Part of the problem is that when I stick my original BRs in my drive, I find that its been a long time ago since I even
had a BR with VC-1. Most are H264. So I'm not even sure how long ago this started happening.

I use Make MKV to convert the BRs to mkv. Only if I want to remove the DTS and convert to ac3 do I even bother
de- and re-muxing. It's not really much trouble to use TS muxer to do the muxing. The only problem with it is that it doesn't
put out chapters that are natively usable by MMG. So that takes up a little extra time.

Mostly, I just wanted to see if this was something that others had experienced and if there was an easy way to fix it.

Another thing I might mention is that all the files that were remuxed with the avi demultiplexer play just fine with
the players on my computer as well as my WD player. Seems like it's just my Seagate players that are affected.

    Okay.

Does DVDFab require you to buy it, in order to be able to decrypt BDs? I haven't looked into it (I don't have a BD drive, so I can't do anything with my Blu-Ray discs on any of my systems). I know MakeMKV wants you to buy it for some or all of the Blu-Ray functionality.
I was originally going to suggest just trying to rip one of the discs with the freeware DVDFab features, and run the result through MakeMKV, but as they probably do want you to pay for the HD ripping features...
(...well, that and I wouldn't be surprised if DVDFab created the same 'issue' as Passkey. Doesn't MakeMKV have limited ripping capabilities?)
