  1. I've had this $20 Tevion tv capture device for a while. Got it to work using WIN Avi free (3rd party software/driver) on my sisters windows laptop. I have no desire to use a windows computer if I don't have to. So I ask does anyone know of a Mac OS X friendly and compatible tv capture software that will work with this guy? I'll post pictures of it and give a link to an outside forum discussion of it....
Link to the discussion about the model and software...

Capture software is only part of the problem. Many capture devices don't have Mac-compatible device drivers available. If you don't have OSX drivers for this device, you can't use it running OSX.

[Edit]Windows almost certainly found drivers for the device on its own, and the WinAVI capture software likely had nothing to do with it. The Tevion may share some fairly generic Windows device drivers with some other inexpensive capture devices.

Drivers, whatever I need to get it to work is precisely what I'm looking for. If I dual boot windows with Mac OS X can I do it then?

I'd say your best bet is to use exactly the same combination of Windows OS and software that worked before on your sister's laptop. There are plenty of cheap capture devices that don't have drivers available for all Windows versions. For example, there are drivers available for XP, or for XP and Vista, but not Windows 7.

If you want a capture device intended for use with OSX, I have seen some, but they are not $20. It looks like they come with Windows software and drivers too.

Just as an FYI, that Tevion card is fairly decent.
Not bad for a $20 item from Aldi.

Use VirtualDub and capture to Huffyuv for best results, in Windows.

Virtualdub works with a lot of different capture devices. If you don't like it, AmaRecTV is another program that reportedly works with a lot of different capture devices.

HuffYUV is an excellent lossless capture codec, and there is software (at least for Windows) that can edit it and convert it to other more familiar formats. However, it uses light compression, so you need to be prepared for very large capture files, on the order of 30GB to 40GB per hour at standard definition resolution.

While looking for something else, I ran across Mac software that might work for the Tevion, and may provide appropriate drivers. It is called VideoGlide, and various Tevion models are listed as compatible. http://www.echofx.com/videoglide.html It is paid software and I'm not sure if there is a free trial.

Holy crap I can't thank you enough! Just got it to work and the quality is only standard definition for the most part (but I can get up to 960x540) but its beautiful quality! Tons of settings too! You can choose max bit rate, codec, etc.! I will definitely take advantage of this so I can get some of my VHS stuff onto digital and grab some stuff off my TiVo...

  9. Oh I should also add it doubles as a way to sort of have a composite/S-video in. I hooked my Xbox360 into it and set the capture dimensions to 1280x720 and had no noticeable or crippling lag when playing. Really nice as I have a monitor I can use but my xbox has no HDMI out.
