Running XP sp3 and Handbrake 0.9.9.5530, higher versions not compatible. I thought I read somewhere version 0.9.9.5530 cannot make soft subs, can someone confirm please or am I missing something. I seem to only be able to hard code subs with this version.

Does XMedia Recode 3.2.6.3 support soft subs? If not what software will under XP sp3? The conversion is from avi to MKV or mp4.

    Thanks, John.

I just tried version 0.9.9.5530 and it worked fine to add a srt under Subtitles, Import srt. Not hardcoded. I can't even select to hardcode srt.

Or just add the subtitle after you encoded with a multiplexer. With for example mkvtoolnix or mymp4boxgui.

Thanks Baldrick. This problem has led me a merry chase. Agreed XMedia Recode 3.2.6.3 makes soft subs ok. It turns out I am using MPC 1.7.0.7785

Media Player Classic - Home Cinema
    ----------------------------------

    Build information:
    Version: 1.7.0.7785 (aa61bac)
    MPC-HC compiler: MSVC 2010 SP1
    Build date: Sep 6 2013 14:47:36

    LAV Filters:
    LAV Splitter: 0.58.2.0
    LAV Video: 0.58.2.0
    LAV Audio: 0.58.2.0
    FFmpeg Compiler: MinGW-w64 GCC 4.7.3

    Operating system:
Name: Windows NT 5.1 (build 2600, Service Pack 3)
    Version: 5.1

This does not see the subs in the mp4 container made by HandBrake, the select tab is greyed out.

Neither of my smart TV boxes (LG & WD) see this stream either. My android pad with MX player pro can enable/disable subs fine.

So the next question. If I install MPC 1.7.9 (which handles subs properly) the MPC 1.7.0 which turns out to be in the K-Lite Codec Pack still plays videos by default. Do I have to remove the K-Lite Codec Pack? If so what should I replace it with?

    Thanks, John.

After a little thought I uninstalled K-Lite Codec Pack 1.7.0.7785 and installed K-Lite_Codec_Pack_1170_Mega. Problem solved, thank you. John.
