I intend using the full 4.7 G capacity of a DVD disk.Which rate control mode is recommended in TMPGenc preparing the dvd file before authoring and then burning in Nero.My avi input file as an example is 90 min long.Your early advice will be appreciated.

if you use vbr rate control you don't know how big the output will be because it depends on the video source. to be sure you use all available space on the dvd you can either use 2-pass vbr and select an average calculated bitrate or use constant bitrate. 2pass may be a bit better but about twice as slow than constant bitrate. to calculate the bitrate use a bitrate calculator, www.vcdhelp.com/calc.htm#calc (note that a dvdr fits 4 700 000 000 bytes = 4.37 GB)

Thank you very much.As a matter of interest-constant bit rate in TMPGenc in the tool-tip info mentions the possibility of block noise in high speed.Constant quality- quality is fixed, size variable.Since I have adequate space in the 4.7 G disk, would you advise preferring the constant quality against constant bitrate? Your advice as usual will be appreciated.

  4. for a 90 min movie I find an average bit rate of 5500 and a max of 8000, with PCM audio will fit on a 4.7g DVD. If you have compressed audio (i.e. you are not authoring with MyDVD 2.3!) you can increase the average bit rate or fit a longer movie. In Tmpgenc, 2 pass VBR is better than CQ_VBR is better than CBR (IMHO), just depends how patient you are!

Thank you very much, bugster. In your experience, all things being equal, does CQ_VBR take longer than CBR?

  6. yes, the higher the quality required, the longer the time to encode (with any particular encoder of course!)
