I am trying to convert an AVI to MPEG in order to burn to(S)VCD. I should mention that when I tried to play the AVI off the hard drive, the sound was fine, but the video was choppy. As if it was having a hard time keeping up with the sound. I attiributed this to my out of date system (450mhz, with 8 meg video card and 192 mbs of RAM). But, since I usually can run fullscreen video without problems, I tried to convert to MPEG figuring it would help...

At first I tried just TMPGEnc, but soon realized I needed to extract the audio to a WAV using VirtualDub first. After that was done, I tried converting the AVI as the video source and the WAV as the audio. I let it run for a few minuted and checked the results. Now the video is smooth with only a small decrease in quality (which I expected), but the sound is very choppy. No pops and clicks like I have seen other posts mentioning, it just kinda stutters.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

p.s. I am new to posting, but I have been reading through the forums for some time now and I would like to thank everyone who helps us newbies. I have learned a lot.

I am new to all this also but I had a problem similar to yours. Let me ask you this... while capturing and converting do you have all unnecessary programs turned off? This made a big difference for me. My stuttering was actually caused by the virus scanner. When I turned it off the stuttering went away (on new capture or conversion). If you haven't read it yet... read the article on optimizing your system and it should make a difference. If you have already tried these things then I'm not sure what to tell you for sure.

    I hope this helps

If you mean programs running in the taskbar, I may have had a few. I usually have 80%+ of free resources, though. But since I am new at this, I didn't do any multi-tasking while I was converting. I just read today that some people do many other things while converting (play games, burn, etc...).

I'll try looking at how to optimize my system like you mentioned.

    Thanks...

forgot to mention that I didn't capture it. I downloaded the file. I would be surprised if it is a capturing issue. It appears to be great quality (except for my problems viewing/converting of course).
