I have some DVD's on my hard disk.

Each Video folder of a movie has a lot of files named:
    VTS_01_x.BUP
    VTS_01_x.IFO
    VTS_01_x.VOB

In each movie, there are different languages, subtitles and other stuff.

I am looking for a software which can extract the video into 1 or more movies, each with their own soundtrack or storing the soundtracks into separate files and with the subtitles in different languages.

Something like the *.SRT files in MP4.

Is there a software to do this?

    TIA

  2. Handbrake can do this for MP4, If you want to save it as a DVD folder then use DVDShrink.

I must be doing something wrong, but HandBrake keeps joining the separate VOB's (4 x 1GB) into 1 huge file whereas there should be 32 single chapters.

You said "soundtracks" in your first post. What do you mean by that?
Is this a DVD full of individual music videos or something similar?

    Example of a DVD:

    VIDEO_TS.BUP 12,288
    VIDEO_TS.IFO 12,288
    VIDEO_TS.VOB 10,240
    VTS_01_0.BUP 59,392
    VTS_01_0.IFO 59,392
    VTS_01_0.VOB 47,677,440
    VTS_01_1.VOB 1,073,739,776
    VTS_01_2.VOB 1,073,739,776
    VTS_01_3.VOB 1,073,739,776
    VTS_01_4.VOB 1,073,739,776
    VTS_01_5.VOB 317,001,728
    VTS_02_0.BUP 12,288
    VTS_02_0.IFO 12,288
    VTS_02_1.VOB 21,080,064

This video contains about 22 Chapters (Tom & Jerry) in 4 languages (English, Thai,Chinese, Malay) and subtitles in 4 languages.

I would like to extract this movie to 22 separate chapters and 4 language files.
The subtitles should be available in a separate file like the language files or any other possibility (menu ?).

    TIA

The only way I know how to rip a DVD "By Chapter" is with DVDDecrypter.
You will need to create an ISO image of that VIDEO_TS folder, mount that image to a virtual drive, open that with DVDDecrypter and choose "By Chapter" in DVDDecrypter's options.

  7. First off. If there is a copy protection or region limitiation on your DVD you want to get rid off you should first rip it using either DVDFab or DVDDecrypter.

In DVDFab select customize split then select the individual titles/audios/subpictures you want.
In DVDDecrypter select the PGC/Chapters you want and under the Stream Processing tab enable stream processeing and make your selection.

Secondly if the DVD is already ripped and you want to use Handbrake you need to select the chapters you want in the Source section next to the title together with audio/subtitles you want.

As for the subtitles if you want them as .SRT files that would be text-files. However on the DVD they are represented as bit-map which means you would have to run them through Optical Character Regonition OCR. While I know how to do that for english (western alphabet) I'm completely lost with repect to oriental alphabets like Thai,Chinese, Malay but perhaps somebody wiser may heelp you (but why the need for seperat files ?)

    Cheers

The files are on my computer and already ripped (downloaded from a Torrent site).

    From the HandBrake website:
"Note: HandBrake can not create chapters if they don't already exist in the source file. You can only name the existing chapters."

If I understand this well, it says that HandBrake can not create chapters if they are not already in the source.

I speak a lot of languages, but none of the Asian languages.
My children and my wife speak Thai and Chinese and like to have the movie in any of these languages.
Therefore, at least these 3 languages should be saved.

videobruger - English and most Western European languages are written in the Latin alphabet. Malay uses the Latin alphabet too. Finally, you really should say "Asian" instead of "Oriental" as "Oriental" is not politically correct any more and some Asian people find the term offensive (it's a holdover from the old colonial days where the various Western powers in charge did not respect the Asian people very much).

Thanks to Gylnethal's recent post this thread will be closed shortly by moderator johns0. Gylnethal - We can't read minds and you did not explicitly state that you wanted to rip by chapter. You'll have to follow hech54's advice and rip with DVDDecrypter in IFO mode to get the rip by chapters option.

The dvddecrypter method will give you a vob for each chapter. You also have to run that 32 times i.e 1 time for each chapter

The paidfor version of vob2mpeg will allow you to extract individual chapters. But again, you may have to do that 32 times if you just want individual chapters.

Neither of these programs will extract the subtitles from the vobs. No great expert of subtitles and AFAIK all the subtitles are stored in the same vob. So if you have more than one language you would have to run the extraction process 32*X where X = the number of languages contained.

    22 chapters (episodes) x 3 subtitle languages x 3 spoken languages = 198 passes.

I think that I will watch the original DVD version.

The Settings option under IFO Mode for DVDDecrypter has a setting to split by chapter. I admit to not having done this but I think that you would not have to do it for each chapter one at a time. The original request is getting into that territory where the original poster wants to do something that nobody else in the world wants to do and that's why he's having trouble finding a way to do it. Again, I have not tried it, but it might split the subtitles out between the individual VOBs. It's his crazy request so he'll just have to try it and see what happens.

Sounds a bit insane, not sure why anyone would need the a movie in separate chapters perhaps if you explained your end goal we could provide better advice. But to get all the subs and languages will take a bit of work i think the easiest method would be to manually cut converted MKV into separate files..
    1. Use chapterxtractor to get a list of chapters (this will provide you with your cut points)
    2. Convert the movie to MKV using Ripbot264 or Megui(I don't use MEGui so i'm not sure if it can retain all subs and audio tracks)
    3. Use SolveigMM AVI Trimmer + MKV or SolveigMM Video Splitter to split the file using the previously extracted chapter points.

    No further explanation needed, lol.
But i'm suprised handbreak is not able to extract by episode it worked on all my old DVDs ie Dark Shadows, Abbot and Costello.
If handbeak doesn't work the method i mentioned earlier should give the OP what they need I have done it a time or two before I found handbreak.
