Hi.
I'm frequently experiencing a problem with the sound when playing video files on my TV through my computer (using an HDMI cable). The sound is still there, but it gets distorted. Sort of difficult to explain it, but it's almost metallic. It happens at random (at least as far as I can tell), and about three or four times during a 50 minute clip. It usually lasts for 10-30 seconds. There's nothing wrong with the file itself.
I've tried several different media players. It's extremely frequent with VLC, so I decided to try other players. I just watched two seasons of a show in MKV format with DivX and PotPlayer, and I experienced no audio problems. I also tried it with VLC, and had problems within minutes. Back to DivX again, playing an AVI file, and getting the problem again. Happened with the same AVI file with PotPlayer and VLC too.
MKV files works perfectly fine with DivX and PotPlayer, but not with VLC. All of the three players struggle with AVI files. I have absolutely no idea what is causing this. It's incredibly frustrating.

That sounds like a decoding problem with maybe the MKV or the audio format you are using. Maybe the PC isn't keeping up. Check your Task Manager and see how much CPU is used during playback. If it's high, like 20% - 50% or more CPU, you may need more computing power. Or at least a video card that has hardware assisted decoding. All of the three players struggle with AVI files.

This would likely be more evident in VLC as it tends to use more computer power than some other players, IMO. I would try MPC-HC and see if that helps. It works well with fromats like MKV.

My PC uses a bit less than 20% CPU during HD MKV playback with Zoom player. Using MPC- HC, the same file uses less than 5%.That's with DXVA hardware decoding. VLC, about 12%. I normally use 1920 X 1080 H.264, video bitrate ~11Mbps. AC-3 5.1 surround sound @ 640Kbps.

 And welcome to our forums.
