  4. buy a scsi addon card. the parallel adapter will cost more, be harder to set up & severely restrict your bandwidth

  5. ASPI drivers are used for digital audio extraction, cd ripping, and cd burning. Win98/Me ship with them, but for some reason they're not included with NT/2000/XP.

Many programs require you install some kind of ASPI layer before you use them (e.g. CDRwin, SmartRipper), and others use their own layer which is why you may be able to burn CDs with some programs in Win2K without having an ASPI layer installed.

If you're using an Adaptec product, you can download a file from their site (look for ASPI32.DLL) that will install the ASPI layer, which will work with all the programs that require ASPI.

On the other hand, if you're like me and think Easy CD Creator sucks, search for a program called Force ASPI, a hack of the Adaptec drivers that allows you to install them without having a qualifying product on your system.

  6. Also, it may be worthwhile to install the ASPI layer on systems running 98/Me because the one that ships with the OS isn't very good.
