  1. I first thought this was player related. I've now installed FFDShow etc. Tried several different codecs. Loaded CCCP etc. Nothing helps.

Basically I can play back anything on my HTPC except with MP4 files the audio is garbled/white noise etc.
I can play back MKV files in full 5.1 or DTS.
I tried to convert a file from MP4 to MKV and the audio issue followed the new file.
    I am out of ideas.
    Can anyone help?

    Thanks in advance.

Are you running windows 7? Then disable the built in mp4 decoder with preferred filter tweaker.

Thanks for the response. Downloaded. Chose the 4 options for MP4 under tweaks. Also rebooted. Same noise unfortunately.

That might be a possibility but wouldn't the video be corrupted upon conversion also? It seems like most converters that don't copy in realtime while playing back the video will simply spit out a corrupted file that is unwatchable and unlistenable (is that a word?).

To the poster - did the original mp4 files play correctly at all at any time? Do they play on a portable media player or an external player like a wdtv player? They may have to be reencoded from the original sources if they are corrupted on any playback device. Try to determine if they can be played properly at all on any system first.

Edit - this is assuming the mp4 files have video content of course. They could be purchased audio files in which case the normal conversion methods wouldn't work except for realtime audio copying while playing - since most past cracking methods have long since been countered by the distributors.
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

They do not play from the start. The video plays back without issue. Full 1080.
Just the sound. Just MP4. Blips beeps and white noise through SPDIF.
