You'll need to Google "cablecard tuner" to find the retailers.

Better selection online but Best Buy carries a few.
Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

SiliconDust is supposed to come out with a new CableCARD product with three tuners, the HDHomerun Prime http://www.silicondust.com/products/hdhomerun/prime/ but a release date has yet to be set. It will supposedly cost about $250. Ceton's product has one more tuner, and costs around $400.

I think the HDHomerun Prime was to be a joint venture with Hauppauge, but perhaps that is yet another product.

cool thanks guys. at least im getting somewhere with this now. yeah 400$ is a bit steep but that thing can do alot at once.

yeah I was just reading that article mentioning the 250$ card coming up.

hdhomerun is a cool concept but fails at the encrypted channels.

I don't think ATI is making their CableCARD tuner any more. There are often some used ones listed on eBay and once in a while a new in box listing shows up. It only has one tuner and at the price ATI charged for it, it wouldn't be able to compete with other devices now entering the market.

For as much money as you are going to spend ... maybe you should think about getting the Hauppauge HD PVR 1212 instead ... sits next to your PC and records from the ... video component ... outputs ... from your Directv or Cable box ... using USB connections.

Only downside to this approach is its not a tuner. Its a realtime capture device and works just like recording from a video tape. You play on the cable/sat box and record on the computer. You can't program a recording schedule and get neat little files all set to go afterwards. You can of course record live tv but as far as I know you can only get one large file that you have to manually split later.

With my hd pvr I use it to save prerecorded shows off my cable hd pvr. The only catch is it records everything on screen over component. So if you have pop up messages it records those onto your video file. So I make sure when I capture I don't have any recordings scheduled. My cable box has the annoying mode that it says "recording started" or "recording started" everytime a show records. So even though I can playback a recording while another show is recording those messages are displayed during playback and would be captured if recorded at the same time. (motorola cable box).

Don't get me wrong the hauppauge hd pvr is very good at what it does. But it is not a tuner in and of itself.

That is what I like about the Directv HR10-250 ... it wont pick up SY FY MPG-4 HD but it has a menu feature for allowing users to record to outside device ... I usually kick in the HD PVR ... a few seconds ahead anyway ... so I do get the screen showing myself doing that ... no biggy for me. I seem to ... every time ... have to run the video I've made with the HD PVR through VideoReDo ... to get it to play correctly or so I can edit out the commercials.

    I noticed ... today ... at ... WeakKnees ... http://www.weaknees.com/flat-fee-tivo-repair.php

that they provide repair service for the HR10-250. I've got one that stopped working and I took the hard drive out ... and another one ... that was in the living room that stopped working ... a few months ago. I haven't opened it up yet ... Directv and I ... we need to do a diagnostic and see if it is really messed up or what. As soon as it stopped working ... I went into the spare bedroom and disconnected the HR10-250 I had in there ... nobody was using it ... and the living room system was back up and running.

Hmm.... I wonder if the motorola box I have has something similar??? Wouldn't hurt to check. If it did than I could dub anytime and not wait until I have a blank window in my recording schedule.

Some cable boxes have the feature. The name of the feature may depend on the provider. Comcast called it "VCR recording". Not all of the STBs will include the feature. My Motorola box is an old one which just has the "Reminder" feature programmed. All it can do is pop up a message telling me to change the channel.

@usually quiet - yeah I couldn't seem to find it. Looks like they don't want to make that any easier.
