I got those beautiful movies on 8mm film with the soundtrack on reel-to-reel. The author, my late uncle, had a self-made sync system between the projector and the tape machine, which is not available any more.

I am fully equipped to digitize film and sound separately, and ask myself how I am going to synchronize them. My tools are Adobe Premiere and Audition, and of course all the free tools like VirtualDub, AviSynth, etc.
Desired output will be DVD for everyday use, but I will of course also keep the uncompressed files to archive the whole work, or to author them to other carriers/formats in the future.

During the movie, there are certain crucial points where image and sound have to be synchronized. My first thought was to use tools like changing the length of the audio (without changing the pitch) found in Audition. But I am concerned that the quality may suffer from the re-sampling. Also, I am not sure if I know how to "attach" certain moments of the audio track to the corresponding frame of the video track, or should I cut the movie into pieces and treat each separately?

Browsing through the forum, I see that many people just remove little pieces of audio, or add something, without stretching. Is this really the proper way to do it? I would highly appreciate if somebody could direct me towards some suiting literature or tutorial.

Thanks.
