What factors determine the time it takes to finalize a DVD? We are creating DVD's live and throughput is an issue for us. Right now it takes about 10 minutes to finalize a 3-4 minute video. Is there any way to reduce this down to about 3 minutes? We are using a Panasonic DVD Recorder model # DMREA18K

There is a minimum amount of the data that has to be written to a DVD Video disc. If your videos are shorter than this minimum, the balance is made up during finalisation. I certainly see this behavior with DVD-R blanks. I don't use +R discs, so I don;t know if the same applies there.

Yeah, even if i fill a disc up on my panasonic standalone recorder, it takes at least 5 minutes to finalize.

I never actually timed it but it takes so long i usually go do something while i am waiting for it to finish.

On the PC regardless of + or - , they finalize way faster so it must be something with the standalones, or at least the panasonic's.

So theoretically if we use DVD+R with less strorage capicity this might help, since the minimum required data would be less in this case?

Not really. These was talk that DVD Decrypter could do it in some cases, but generally a disc needs to be finalised in at least the same model recorder that recorded it.

Does your panasonic use +R's ?

As far as i knew they only used -R's, unless they changed something on the pannys & started using +R's also.
My standalone panny won't even read a recorded/burned +R unless it has had the booktype changed to DVD-ROM
