  1. hello everyone!

I noticed vlc has a really poor image quality compared to WMP when I watch 720p tv show's and it really bothers me, cause wmp has a lot smoother and colorful picture....I attached the screenshoot and as you can see vlc has a bit of a grainy image and I'd like to have it as clear as on WMP, so please tell me what to do? I tried other outputs, but none comes close to this in wmp...maybe if I could know how wmp is set I could set vlc in settings the same, but I don't so please help...I don't wanna stop using vlc just because of that, cause wmp has a really quiet sound when watching hd (even when having all volume settings on max) and vlc is my only option.

    VLC

    WMP

so you see picture diferrence is VERY annyoing and noticeable...wmp feels like real one while vlc is like so artificial =/

  3. wmp uses a different decoding chain - directshow. That directshow decoder may apply post processing (smoothing) depending on what the source is (if it's wmv it does for sure)

vlc cannot access it - it's not a directshow player, only directshow decoders can access it (eg. mpc, mpchc, wmp, bsplayer etc..) . VLC uses libavcodec to decode

The other differences in color - vlc uses rec.709 conversion to RGB (which is correct for HD material) , but wmp is using rec.601. This is most noticable in reds/skin tones

If you prefer WMP's decoding, then use WMP or a directshow player. Some of them have audio options like normalization so you can use them instead if the low audio is a concern. Depending on what directshow decoder you are using for audio, you can enable filters like audio normalization as well.

look above her eyelid and fringe, the difference in details is clearly visible...vlc distorts it totally..also look at her skin on the right cheek and the make up, wmp has it clear and shiny as it should be while vlc shot is really poor

    Hi
It's possible to adjust the 'sharpness' of VLC, but I don't know whether it will improve matters for you.
    Explanation is here:- http://www.iloveubuntu.net/vlc-114-sharpen-effect-best-video-playback

I'm playing a mkv file here and I have all codecs installed (k-lite codec pack full) also about the color, is there a way to change .709 setting to .601 as in WMP?
I managed to get a bit better pic quality by ticking use system codecs if available, but still it's not as smooth and it's just a tiny bit more pale, so I think I could also play around with brightness and contrasts filters no?
though I got a problem now, when I change sliders, the picture doesn't change at all...maybe because I'm getting those 'squares' when fastforwarding and also when I stop fast forwarding pic it still ffw's for about a sec, so I don't know what's wrong with it? also if I fast forward a few times when on pause, vlc just freezes and I have to close it by ending process in task manager...
maybe, that's cause I ticked to use system codecs if available? but I need this as pic is slightly better now...
here's a screen of those 'squares I'm talking about

well I don't wanna just ditch vlc, cause I love it, but this video quality bothers me...and I don't know how I can set my audio louder on wmp as I already have all to the max and it's still quiet...maybe you can help me with that and I can watch hd video on wmp instead of vlc.

what is the audio? ac3? what decoder for wmp ? you can adjust the audio in the decoder (e.g. if you are using ffdshow, select normalize audio, if you are using ac3 filter I think you can adjust the volume as well

You can also use mpchc instead

thanks. I tried this, but no visible difference =/

however, here's a screen of how I improved the pic by ticking 'use system codecs if available'

you can see the image quality and details are a lot closer to wmp, but still color is a bit off that's why I said I could play around with filers, only I need help now regarding those 'squares' I mentioned as I can move sliders however I want, but pic won't change...you can also notice when I took this screenshoot and I moved vlc window around to resize it that the picture didn't expand, but there just appeared those black edges, because those squares make the pic freeze or something...hopefully you understand what I mean

where can I check which decoder it uses in wmp, please?

mpchc opens ffdshow icon in my sytem tray and I don't know for what reason, but video just lags...also I noticed the quality is still very similar to vlc's improved from my last screenshot, so I'd like to at least fix audio on wmp, so I can watch hd video properly there if vlc can't help me.

  10. where can I check which decoder it uses in wmp, please?
    render the file in graphstudio

you can use preferred filter tweaker on win7 to change the decoder

did you set the decoder to ffmpeg-mt for h.264 ?

  11. I also find wmp annoying because on vlc shortcut keys are all so great and easy, volume up just by scrolling mouse up and pause by space...I don't know if that can be modified in wmp too, cause I know BS player has same shortucts, but it's not usable to me as the quality still doesn't each wmp's

could you please tell me a step by step on how to do that? I'll download that program now.

I wasn't setting anything in wmp...will try it now if I find it...

EDIT: I can't find this setting in mpchc...=/ where do I need to go?

  13. installed graph studio now, so lets forget about mpchc...gonna fix wmp audio instead, so please help me with rendering you mentioned before

  14. in graphstudio, file=>render media file

the boxes will connect the pins and show what direct show decoder is currently being used

if it's the microsoft decoder on win7 you have to use preferred filter tweaker to select ffdshow or ac3filter (you cannot adjust the ms decoder)

so it says default direct sound device...what do I have to do in wmp then to have louder audio and where to go?

  16. Just drop your video onto the GraphStudio Window.

    Oops, too late.

  17. it says ffdshow audio decoder.

in the ffdshow audio configuration you can use amplify or normalize or adjust master volume. You have to checkmark the box to activate it (under "volume"), push apply and ok. You can adjust it to your tastes

got it. pulled the master volume to 400% at first and sound was very bad, so I lowered it to 200% and I got my volume like on vlc now. yay! thank you!

tho I still need help with wmp now about shortcut keys and subtitles, about shortcut keys I'd like to know if I can set them like in vlc, so I'll be able to turn volume up just by scrolling the mouse and pause by space on the keyboard?

and vlc has an option to load subtitles with video, so I was wondering if I can do that in wmp too instead of always having to have subtitles named the same and in the same folder as my video file so wmp detects them automatically?

  19. Sorry I don't use WMP, so don't know about shortcut keys or subs loading. If nobody else replies to answer that in a few days, consider starting another topic because it really is a different topic

thanks anyway for helping me so far :]
btw I found out you can't change shortcut keys in WMP, BUT I found a program that does that so I got that covered. Now I only need help on selecting subtitles manually instead of having them in the same folder and same name in the folder with a movie, so if anyone can help me with that I'd really appreciate it
